The Kapaleeshwarar Temple is a prominent Hindu temple situated in Mylapore, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. Mylapore is one of the oldest and most culturally rich areas in Chennai.

Deities

The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, who is worshipped as Kapaleeshwarar (meaning 'Lord of the Skull'). His consort, Goddess Parvati, is revered here as Karpagambal, also known as the "Goddess of the Wish-Yielding Tree". There are also shrines dedicated to other deities like Natana Vinayakar (dancing Ganesha), Singaravelar (Lord Murugan), Dakshinamurthy, and Durgai, amongst others.

Brief Legend

One of the prominent legends associated with the temple describes Goddess Parvati's transformation into a peahen after being distracted during a divine discourse by Lord Shiva. She performed penance under a sacred Punnai tree at Mylapore to regain her original form. This legend is believed to be the origin of the name Mylapore (from "mayil," the Tamil word for peacock). The Goddess Karpagambal is particularly revered as a wish-granting deity. The Rahu Abhishekam performed twice daily is believed to mitigate the effects of planetary afflictions. Special pujas like Rudrabhisekam and Lord Kapalika Homam are performed to invoke Lord Shiva's blessings for strength, inner peace, spiritual growth, and the removal of obstacles.

The Kapaleeshwarar Temple holds immense religious and cultural significance. It is considered one of the most important and ancient Shiva temples in the region. It showcases beautiful Dravidian and Vijayanagar architectural styles with majestic gopurams (gateway towers) adorned with intricate sculptures. The temple is a symbol of faith and resilience, having been destroyed by the Portuguese in the 16th century and subsequently rebuilt by the Vijayanagara kings. The temple also houses the bronze idols of the 63 Saivite Nayanar saints. The annual Brahmotsavam festival in March-April, culminating in the Arupathimoovar festival, is a grand event attracting large crowds.
