These biscuits are warm, buttery, and made sweet and tangy with the addition of fresh strawberries.

Now I'll prepare you by sharing that these biscuits are not sweet. They taste just like homemade biscuits but have a nice pop of sweetness from the strawberries with each bite. They mainly fall on the savory end when it comes to taste. But they're fairly simple to make with just a few ingredients, many of which you probably already have in your kitchen.

These biscuits are perfect to serve with cheesy grits and salmon patties for a full breakfast.

What Kind of Strawberries Should I Use?

Use fresh strawberries for the best flavor and texture. For prep, wash them thoroughly, and remove the stems and green leaves. Use a sharp knife and cutting board to chop them into smaller pieces. Pat the diced strawberries with a paper towel to remove the excess moisture.

When adding the fresh berries to the biscuit dough, gently fold them into the dough.

Ingredients You'll Need For Strawberry Biscuits

  1. All-Purpose Flour - Use plain all-purpose flour with nothing added. Self-rising flour is not necessary to make these biscuits.
  2. Baking Powder - Check the date on the package to make sure that it has not expired. This ingredient helps to give the biscuits the rise they need to be light and fluffy.
  3. Sugar - Adds a little sweetness to the biscuits without making them overly sweet.
  4. Cream of Tartar - Be sure to check the expiration date on the package to make sure that it's still good. This secret ingredient adds much-needed acid to the biscuits. This ingredient can usually be found at your local grocery store in the spice aisle.
  5. Salt - A small amount to balance out the ingredient flavors. I prefer to use kosher salt or baking salt when baking. I do not recommend using table salt.
  6. Butter - Make sure it's extremely cold butter. It can be unsalted butter or salted butter, whichever you prefer.
  7. Egg - A single large egg is all that's needed for this recipe. It's perfectly acceptable to grab it cold straight from the refrigerator when making biscuits. Lightly beat it before adding to the biscuit dough.
  8. Buttermilk - Cold buttermilk makes the biscuits moist, slightly tangy, and rich in flavor.
  9. Ripe Strawberries - Use fresh strawberries to provide a sweet and tangy flavor that pairs perfectly with the buttery biscuit.

Equipment You'll Need

Making homemade biscuits requires a little bit of labor, but not much equipment. However, there are a few pieces of equipment that can help to make the process slightly easier.

How to Make Strawberry Biscuits

Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F. and prepare a baking dish lined with parchment paper or lightly sprayed with nonstick spray. In a large bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients. The all-purpose flour, baking powder, sugar, cream of tartar, and salt. In a separate small bowl, whisk together the egg, and buttermilk.

Using a pastry cutter/pastry blender, cut the cubed butter into the flour mixture until it resembles a coarse meal and the butter is about the size of a pea.

Combine the egg mixture with the flour mixture until it comes together to form a loose dough ball. Gently fold in the strawberries before rolling out the dough on a lightly floured surface.

Recipe Tips & Tricks

Storage Tips

Storage. If you have any leftover homemade biscuits, allow them to cool to room temperature before storing. Place the biscuits into an airtight container or plastic bag. Place them into the refrigerator for up to 3 to 4 days.

Reheating. When ready to serve them again, simply reheat in the oven at 300 degrees F. until warm. They can also be reheated in the microwave or air fryer for a quicker option.

Freezing. The baked and unbaked biscuits can be frozen. Place them into a freezer-safe container or freezer bag and store them in the freezer for up to 1 month. Allow the baked biscuits to thaw in the refrigerator overnight. The unbaked frozen biscuits can be baked from frozen, just keep in mind they may require more baking time.
