Katy Perry and Doechii’s “I’m His, He’s Mine” Is a Low-Key Slow Burner (original) (raw)

The latest single from Katy Perry’s upcoming sixth studio album, 143, finds the singer and Florida rapper Doechii clapping back at “hoes” who creep into their partners’ DMs. The midtempo “I’m His, He’s Mine,” which the duo previewed at Wednesday night’s MTV Video Music Awards, follows the more dance-oriented singles “Woman’s World” and “Lifetimes,” but where those songs felt instantly dated, “I’m His, He’s Mine” is much more on trend.

Constructed around a downturned sample of the iconic organ riff from Crystal Waters’s 1991 hit “Gypsy Woman (She’s Homeless),” the three-minute “I’m His, He’s Mine” is a low-key slow burner. Fully committed to the interpolation, Perry slides into a variation of Waters’s infectious “la-da-dee, la-da-da” hook during the post-chorus. She and Doechii also nod to another club classic, Chaka Khan’s “I’m Every Woman,” throughout: “I’m every woman he knows exists…I’m every woman that’s in his mind.”

The music video for “I’m His, He’s Mine” sees Perry flaunting some of the aerial skills that she put on display at the VMAs, as well as some very precarious moves atop a vintage silver Corvette with a license plate bearing Perry’s new album’s title. Not to be outdone, Doechii glides in for her verse on a quad-rotored drone. In other words, don’t try this at home.
