The Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival results have finally been confirmed, more than 24 hours after the procession began. Beatlemania from Gremlins CC took the top spot and the Ker Cup when the results were announced on Sunday night.
In the early hours of Saturday night, Carnivalites had gathered in the town as tradition to hear the results being announced, only to be told ‘technical issues’ meant the open and local feature classes couldn’t be announced. At 7pm on Sunday the full results were announced to the gathered crowds – and there were changes to the provisional results announced last night.
The Hardy Spicer and Blake Cup for best open tableau was provisionally awarded to King William CC with The Pop-Up Library, with Brunel by Huckyduck CC in second place. But when the results were officially announced, the Glastonbury club had dropped down to third, with Huckyduck being announced as the winners.
Masqueraders CC with Step Right Up were announced as the Usher Cup winners in the Open Feature class, with Harlequin CC and Pinball, Globe CC and Driven by Precision, and Westonzoyland CC and Sawmill rounding out the top four.
Newmarket CC with Tour de Somerset won the Comic class, while Birds of Paradise from Rubalo JCC won the Juvenile class.
The Local Feature class was the last to be announced – and Gremlins CC regained the Ker Cup for the first time since 2019 with their Beatles-themed Beatlemania cart. Ramblers CC with Pinball came second, Renegades CC with The Manor came third, and Marketeers CC with Spirit of the Eagle were placed fourth. Lime Kiln CC, Vagabonds CC, Griffens CC, British Flag CC, Cavaliers CC and Crusaders CC rounded out the top ten. There were some boos which rung out when the results were announced.

A statement from the carnival organisers had read: “Bridgwater Carnival Committee would like to apologise for the issues surrounding the results of our 2024 procession.
“We experienced some technical issues with the laptops we were using last night, which sadly we were unable to resolve. We understand many entrants are upset and disappointed and so are we with the uncertainty it has caused.
“You can be assured we will be carrying out a thorough review into what happened with the results over the coming weeks, although as we are sure you will appreciate, this will not happen until after the 2024 carnival season is over.
“On behalf of Bridgwater Carnival, we sincerely apologise for the delay in reviewing all judges' points and for the technical issues we experienced last night.
“After listening and following feedback from our carnival clubs, we can confirm we will now be announcing the results tonight behind the Town Hall at 7pm. For those who can’t make it in person, we will also be broadcasting this live on Facebook.
“We acknowledge that this has been a less than ideal situation, but please be assured that our dedicated team has been working tirelessly to address the issue and ensure the accuracy of the results.
“We kindly request respect for our hardworking volunteers, who have been diligently working since last night and throughout the day to finalise the results. We understand the frustration and extend our empathy to all participants.
“Thank you for your understanding, and we look forward to welcoming you at 7pm behind the Town Hall (car park, same location as the concert results announcements).”
