Lip Critic on Their Unorthodox Yet Authentic Creative Process - SPIN (original) (raw)

Lip Critic have an unorthodox musical process. But the experimental NYC quartet always stay true to themselves, they tell SPIN backstsage at SXSW.

“I feel like our approach to making music is kind of different than a normal alternative-band way of making music,” says drummer Danny Eberle. “It’s like, all this aggressive electronic music, but we’re still just writing pop songs in a way. So I feel like that’s the best way to get a message out to somebody—as far as lyrically goes, as far as aggressive music goes. It’s […] extremely immediate, I feel, when you’re listening to it. It just hits you in the face, and it’s like, ‘Oh, I get what they’re on.'”

Lip Critic encourage fans to follow their own creative paths.

“We want to encourage people generally to do whatever they would see fit musically and artistically,” says vocalist Bret Kaser. “I think there was a lot of apprehension for us starting out […]: Whatever scene of music you’re in or whatever your friends are listening to, if what you’re making doesn’t align with it, there can be this feeling of, ‘Is this stupid, is this corny, is this whatever?’ But as soon as you start to follow exactly what you think would be fun, you find the stuff that’s fun.”
