Reds trade 27-year old RHP to Orioles | Sporting News (original) (raw)

The Cincinnati Reds recently acquired a pitcher from Massillon, Ohio.

But the right-hander, Kyle Nicolas, didn't last long. He's on the move again.

The Reds announced Thursday that they've traded Nicolas to the Baltimore Orioles. They'll receive cash considerations in return for the righty they designated for assignment.

Nicolas is originally a second-round pick in 2020 by the Miami Marlins out of Ball State.

He was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates' organization before arriving in MLB and pitched parts of three seasons in the majors with Pittsburgh.

Nicolas played for Team Italy in the World Baseball Classic and came to the Reds by the start of the season.

He had an 8.59 ERA in seven outings with the Reds, and a 5.17 ERA in 14 appearances with Triple-A Louisville.

The Reds weren't seeing enough promise out of Nicolas to keep him around any longer.

The Orioles figured they'd check out a once-promising arm and see if there was anything they could unlock about Nicolas' remaining potential.

There's a decent chance Baltimore will end up DFA'ing Nicolas down the road, too, but it's a low-risk opportunity for the Orioles to bring him aboard and see what he might be able to provide.
