YouTube - statistics & facts

Since its release in 2005, YouTube's global online presence has reshaped the digital landscape. Acquired by Google in 2006 for less than two billion U.S. dollars, YouTube has not only become a financial powerhouse, generating over 31 billion U.S. dollars in advertising revenues in 2023, but also a cultural phenomenon, particularly in the music industry.

YouTube's name carries a brand value of 31.7 billion U.S. dollars being the second fastest-growing brand worldwide among the 100 most valued companies.

Ads and premium content: YouTube’s business pillars

When sizing up YouTube’s business, direct sales are only a part of YouTube’s financial success: the ads business accounts for approximately 10 percent of the company’s revenue – and it is one of the flagship brands operated by the internet giant, after its Google Cloud services.

Meanwhile, YouTube Music and YouTube Premium subscribers keep growing, reaching 100 million paying users in 2024. The United States represented the largest market for the platform in December 2024.

A large audience that enjoys a little bit of everything

Between various professional and user-generated content – YouTube users can access videos that range from music and gaming to DIYs and educational clips. YouTube has become a launching platform for corporate media content such as official music videos. In 2021, BTS music video “Butter” went viral within a matter of hours and reached 100 million views in less than one day.

In 2024, YouTube registered over 2.5 billion global viewers. The platform’s user base was composed of more men than women, with around 12 percent of YouTube total users being men aged between 25 and 34 years, and approximately nine percent in the same age group. In January 2024, India counted the largest YouTube audience by far at almost 476 million users, followed by the United States with 240 million users on the popular video platform.

YouTube’s stronghold has no competition

With TikTok’s ascending popularity, competition in the digital video environment has risen. Despite the pressure, YouTube has seen its advertising revenues regain healthy growth between 2022 and 2023, while subscriptions and user engagement have been climbing to unprecedented peaks. With the adoption of the short video format, YouTube has shown its readiness to cater to users’ changing tastes, which will keep audiences glued to their screens. Nonetheless, what started as a simple acquisition not only completely transformed Google's advertising businesses, but also provided a new media platform that shifted how online video and musical content is produced.
