Arsenal transfers, transfer news, table, fixtures, results and stats - TEAMtalk (original) (raw)
Arsenal Football Club, also known as The Gunners, first came into being in 1884. Originally known as Dial Square when it was founded by workers at the Woolwich Arsenal, it took about a month before the club renamed itself Royal Arsenal. The club has a long and storied history with plenty of success over the years including 13 league titles, 14 FA Cups, two League Cups, 16 FA Community Shields and a European Cup Winners' Cup title. Indeed no club has won the FA Cup more times than Arsenal.
The club is currently managed by former player Mikel Arteta but without a doubt, its most recognizable managers are Arsene Wenger, Herbert Chapman and George Graham. It was under Wenger, who is also the club's longest-serving manager, that the team enjoyed their greatest period of success - including an incredible run of 49 games unbeaten between 2003 and 2004 - a feat that saw that team becoming known as ‘The Invincibles’. Chapman was in charge during the 1930s when the club won their first silverware.
Arsenal have featured many great players, but the group that formed the core of the 2003/04 Invincibles team are the names that will long be remembered. These include strikers Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp, goalkeeper David Seaman, midfielders Robert Pires, Patrick Vieira and Freddie Ljundberg and defenders Lauren, Kolo Toure and Sol Campbell.
