Aston Villa could sacrifice Newcastle target Tyrone Mings if Steven Gerrard feels he can land a defensive upgrade, according to a report.

Mings currently captains Aston Villa but his future there is now in doubt. He has been linked with a transfer to Newcastle sporadically since the appointment of Eddie Howe there. Howe was the man who signed him for Bournemouth before his Villa Park move.

Since then, Mings has become an England international and remains a Premier League regular. The next step in his career could be to join up with Newcastle’s ambitious project.

Despite signing him before, Howe never really got to see the best of Mings due to injuries. But the Newcastle head coach knows exactly what his previous signing is about and could seek a reunion.

This is reiterated by the Daily Mirror, who value Mings at the £35million mark. If he was to join Newcastle for that figure, he would be their third costliest signing of all time.

Newcastle’s spending could be significant again in their first summer transfer window with Saudi owners. But they will not be paying extreme sums just yet. Someone like Mings could fit within their strategy.

From the perspective of Aston Villa, the report claims Gerrard is not actively looking to offload the 29-year-old. However, he would consider sacrificing him if a defensive signing of his own is on the way.

In that regard, Gerrard is still hoping his former club Liverpool will let Joe Gomez make a move to Villa Park.

Gomez has been on Villa’s radar for a few months, but Liverpool would not let him go in January. Their stance for the summer will have to come to light after a season in which he has had to be patient following an injury return.

If Villa can secure Gomez’s signature, Mings could be allowed to make the move to Newcastle.

The Magpies are in the market for another defender after strengthening across the back in January. They signed Kieran Trippier at right-back, Dan Burn at centre-back and took Matt Targett on loan from Villa at left-back.

The deal for Targett could become permanent in the summer. Therefore, if Mings is to join Newcastle, it may be as part of a double raid.

Tyrone Mings deal may make sense for both clubs

Mings remains a player who splits opinion, so it is fair to see why Villa may not deem him unsellable.

But there are appealing traits to his game, too. Therefore, it is not unreasonable for Newcastle to have an interest.

They want a centre-back partner for Burn and the left-footed Mings could provide balance. Making signings from other Premier League clubs has already been a useful strategy when looking at the example of ex-Brighton man Burn.

Newcastle can afford world-class stars if they want, but chose a more sensible approach in January. Someone of Mings’ level may be what they need right now.

As for Villa, the chance to regenerate their defence with Gomez would be appealing. If they can get the sum they would want for Mings, it would help them reinvest. In effect, all parties could benefit from a potential transfer.
