Mason Mount: New optimism for Man Utd as Chelsea return to negotiating table, with transfer timeline revealed (original) (raw)

The transfer of Mason Mount to Manchester United has been given a major shot in the arm as a report has revealed they are back in talks with Chelsea, with a possible end to the saga now in sight.

Mount has refused to agree a new deal at Chelsea, despite the Blues sending him multiple contract offers. With the midfielder’s current contract due to expire in June 2024, this has forced Chelsea to consider his sale this summer.

Liverpool are admirers of Mount, although it is actually Man Utd who are pushing to land him. The Red Devils have had offers worth £40m, £50m and £55m rejected by Chelsea.

Mount’s current employers ideally wanted £70-75m at the start of the negotiations, a sum Man Utd were never going to pay. Indeed, Man Utd director of football John Murtough soon told Chelsea he would not offer more than £60m for the England star.

However, after the third bid was rejected, Chelsea told Man Utd they were willing to drop their demands to £65m as they want to get the deal done. They know Mount wants to make the move and do not want an unhappy player in their dressing room next season.

A few days have passed since Chelsea and Man Utd were last in touch, leading to fears that the transfer might fall through. But according to the latest information from the Daily Mail, Mount’s potential switch to Old Trafford is back on.

They reveal the two sides are back in discussions as they attempt to reach a compromise over the transfer fee. Man Utd are willing to increase their £55m bid slightly, which means they could get a bit nearer to Chelsea’s reduced £65m price tag. Although, Chelsea will also have to accept closer to £60m if the move is going to reach completion.

It is claimed an agreement should be reached ‘in the next week’. It may not take long for Man Utd to announce Mount as their first summer signing after that as he has already sorted out personal terms with them. The 24-year-old will just have to pass a medical before he becomes Man Utd’s latest big-money arrival.

Man Utd to beat Euro giants to Mason Mount

As per The Guardian, Bayern have recently ‘stepped up their interest’ in Mount as they look to capitalise on the troublesome talks between Man Utd and Chelsea. Thomas Tuchel knows Mount well, as the pair worked together previously at Chelsea.

Man Utd have also been considering alternatives to Mount, including Bayern duo Leon Goretzka and Ryan Gravenberch, as well as Everton’s Amadou Onana.

However, Man Utd now have renewed optimism over signing their prime target Mount, which means Bayern will likely lose out and those alternatives will probably be snubbed.

Mount could be joined at Man Utd by Serie A goalkeeper Andre Onana. Erik ten Hag has decided on him as the perfect replacement for David de Gea and Man Utd are getting closer to agreeing a deal with Inter.

Meanwhile, Man Utd will not be able to sign a Premier League star as he wants to head to Germany instead, according to a report.
