Southampton FC transfers, transfer news, table, fixtures, results and stats | TEAMtalk (original) (raw)

Known as The Saints, this south coast team came into being in 1885 as a church football team and hence the nickname. There are many links to their church roots, originally known as Saint Mary's Church of England Young Men's Association. They now play their home games at St Mary's Stadium where they located in 2001 after leaving their previous base, The Dell.

A quick glance through their history shows that Southampton were founder members of the Premier League in 1992. They achieved their best league finish in the season of 1983/84 when they finished second in the top division. They have also won the FA Cup once, beating Manchester United 1-0 at Wembley in 1976. They have also been FA Cup runners-up on three occasions and League Cup runners-up twice.

The Saints are currently managed by Austrian Ralph Hasenhuttl. They have had many great managers over the course of their history including Ernest Arnfield, Ted Bates, Lawrie McMenemy and Nigel Adkins, who managed a win percentage of 54,03 in his more than 100 games in charge.

Southampton have been home to many great players over the years. The club’s greatest icon is almost certainly the mercurial Matthew Le Tissier. Other luminaries include World Cup winner Terry Paine, Alan Shearer, Ivan Golac, Rickie Lambert and Steve Moran.
