Maurice Arthur Pope, engineer, army officer, diplomat (b at Rivière du Loup, Qué 9 Aug 1889; d at Ottawa 20 Sept 1978). Son of Sir Joseph Pope and grandson of Sir Henri T. Taschereau, he was a strong nationalist who believed that Canadians must respect the traditions of both founding peoples.

Maurice Arthur Pope, engineer, army officer, diplomat (b at Rivière du Loup, Qué 9 Aug 1889; d at Ottawa 20 Sept 1978). Son of Sir Joseph Pope and grandson of Sir Henri T. Taschereau, he was a strong nationalist who believed that Canadians must respect the traditions of both founding peoples. He joined the Royal Canadian Engineers in 1915 and served overseas in the CANADIAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCE. Remaining in the army, he became vice-chief of the General Staff (1941), senior Canadian Army member of the PERMANENT JOINT BOARD ON DEFENCE (1942), chairman of the Canadian Joint Staff Mission, Washington (1942-44), and military staff officer to PM Mackenzie KING. He was ambassador to Belgium (1950-53) and Spain (1953-56). His memoirs, Soldiers and Politicians, were published in 1962.
