In June, a woman in Clay County was accused of shooting her husband to death after claiming he'd tried to strangle her before she took the shot, court documents say. Melissa Hoffner-Allen, 48, was charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection to the death of her husband, Ricky Allen, 50.

The accused pleaded not guilty. The pair had celebrated their 10th anniversary about seven months prior, according to posts on social media. Law enforcement officials of the Clay County Sheriff's Office said they received a call from the 16200 block of Kountry Ridge Drive, which is north of Kearney, Missouri, around 10 p.m.

Hoffner-Allen, who was the one who dialed 911 ,immediately confessed to police detectives that she shot her husband in the chest with a semiautomatic gun, court documents said. The 50-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers took the woman into custody where she said Allen was "mad at her" that night, which prompted him to assault and choke her, court documents said.

She told officials she managed to slip away and reach the semiautomatic weapon, which her husband had bought. Hoffner-Allen claimed her late husband encouraged her to shoot him. Investigators found shell casings on the staircase of the couple's home along with several more guns. The shooter also had visible bruises on her arms at the time of her arrest.

Allen, according to social media posts, worked as a union pipefitter. He had three children: Dylan, Autumn and Bekah, and four grandchildren. Bekah, who had recently graduated from Kearney High School, defended his father online. “He never failed to make people feel accepted and loved,” Bekah Allen wrote on Facebook. “He was the most loyal friend and was always willing to help someone in need.”
