Cam Young asked awkward 'smiling' question after winning The Players Championship (original) (raw)
Cameron Young was asked an awkward smiling question at the Players Championship, as the 28-year-old father of three took home the trophy and $4.5 million prize
Cameron Young’s facial expressions showed little excitement after he beat TGL teammate Matt Fitzpatrick for $4.5 million at the Players Championship.
Young was a runner-up on the PGA tour seven times before earning his first win in August 2025, and was trailing Fitzpatrick by one stroke with two to play. He birdied the 17th hole and then carded par on 18, and barely cracked a smile during the final moments.
Young, 28, celebrated with his family, including his son who ran onto the 18th green and his daughter who sat with his wife. The Ryder Cup star was asked about his low-key response in the post-round press conference. It comes after Young's subtle gesture to Fitzpatrick was spotted before he broke his heart.
“No, I think honestly, I think if you asked my wife, she would say he's a very, very happy person,” said Young after a four-under 68 to finish 13 under 275.
“And I am. I mean, I love my life, I love my family, I love my job. I couldn't ask for much more. I'm healthy. I have healthy little children.
“So I just think it's more for me about I think that's the best way for me to play the best. Now why am I not happy? I am (laughing). I don't know. I'm thinking to answer questions and my brain is very tired after playing that golf course for four days. So it takes a lot for me to come up with a reasonable answer.
“But yeah, I don't know. I think just generally you're not going to get a ton out of me, but it doesn't mean that I'm not, you know, very, very happy to be sitting here with this.”
Young earned just his second win on the PGA tour at the most anticipated event of the season at TPC Sawgrass, and was happy his family witnessed it as the American flag was raised in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.
“I've dreamed of having that moment with them for a long time,” said Young after his wallet grew by $4.5 million. “And last year at the Wyndham Championship happened to be one of three weeks that they missed all year last year. So they were celebrating 2,500 miles away.
“To get to see them after I went and did my interviews and stuff and got to actually, you know, give my boys a hug, see my wife, see my little girl, that's something I'll remember for a long time.
"Yeah, there's a lot going on out there. My kids are more interested in the drone than the trophy, which I think is a really nice bit of perspective on a day like today, but, yeah, really thankful to have them here.”
