THE first day of school is a big day for any child - and their mother.

It was no different for Princess Diana, who along with Prince Charles accompanied her eldest son Prince William in the car to drop him off at Wetherby Prep School in Notting Hill, London.

Most kids are prepared for the standard "first day of school snap", but few are met by an army of photographers on the school run.

With this in mind, on the way there Diana shared some words of wisdom with her son to prepare him for what was in store.

Ken Wharfe, former bodyguard to Princes William and Harry, told Yahoo's Royal Box: "Diana said to him in the car, 'When you get to school there are going to be lots of media and lots of photographers, you've got to behave yourself.

"'You're going to get this for the rest of your life.'"

Sage advice indeed, but Prince William's response to his mum was priceless.

When the family got out of the car, the young prince made a cheeky remark to the gaggle of snappers on the street.

Ken recalled: "William turned around and said something which was extraordinary. He said, 'Don't like 'tographers.'"

Though he still managed to give them a little wave as he stood on the steps.

Earlier this year it was a case of like father, like daughter, as Princess Charlotte told photographers outside Prince Louis' christening: "You're not coming."

Prince William has continued to be fiercely protective of his family's privacy and invited a select few snappers to witness Prince George's first day of school.

When their children started nursery, they took their own photos and released them.

This year Kensington Palace didn't release any pictures of Prince George returning to the classroom.

The adorable five-year-old went into Year One at his £6,110-a-term London private school - and with that will come a host of new lessons and activities.
