New York State is situated in the northeast of the US and is the fourth-most populous state. While its most renowned city is New York City, the state capital is Albany. Its landscape includes the Appalachian and Adirondack Mountains as well as the Hudson River which flows through the eastern part of the state. It also has forested areas and lakes and is bordered by Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. It is a Democratic stronghold and has voted for the Democratic candidate in every presidential election from, and including, 1988.
