Building your future: Explore Construction Technology at MCC (original) (raw)

National Construction Appreciation Week, celebrated the third week in September, is a perfect time to highlight the exciting opportunities available in the construction industry. At Marshalltown Community College (MCC), our Construction Technology program offers students a unique chance to develop practical skills and knowledge that can lead to rewarding careers.

Building skills

Our hands-on curriculum covers a wide range of carpentry competencies, including framing, roofing, drywall, concrete, trim, cabinetry, wood finishing, painting, and more. Through practical projects and real-world experiences, students gain a deep understanding of the construction process and learn how to use a variety of tools and equipment.

In addition to carpentry, our program offers students a glimpse into related fields like electrical, HVAC, and plumbing. This exposure helps them identify their interests and explore potential career paths. Regardless of which trade they choose, the skills and knowledge they gain in our program are valuable and transferable.

Beyond technical skills, our program also emphasizes problem-solving, critical thinking, and teamwork. Students work together on projects, learning to collaborate effectively and overcome challenges. This experience prepares them for success in any career path, not just construction.

To keep students engaged and motivated, we tailor projects to their individual interests. This year, students have worked on a variety of projects, from building a garage to crafting a guitar.

Community involvement

One of the most rewarding aspects of our program is the opportunity to give back to the community. As a class, our students have taken on a number of projects in the area. Our students regularly take on building projects, such as building wheelchair ramps, renovating local parks, or helping with disaster relief efforts. These projects not only benefit the community but also instill a sense of pride and accomplishment in our students.

Skilled workers

The construction industry is growing rapidly, and there is a strong demand for skilled workers. Our program provides students with the foundation they need to pursue a variety of careers, from carpentry and construction management to architecture and engineering. Whether you’re interested in a hands-on trade or a more managerial role, construction offers countless opportunities for growth and advancement.

If you’re looking for a rewarding and challenging program that will prepare you for a successful career, consider enrolling in our Construction Technology program at MCC.
