Announced way back on Godzilla Day 2022, Toho is preparing a new Japanese Godzilla movie. The production is slated for a release on November 3rd, 2023, in Japan and December 1st, 2023, in the United States. Known as Godzilla Minus One, the movie is being directed by Takashi Yamazaki, director of Always: Sunset on Third Street (2005), Yokaipedia (2022) and other films.

October 18th, 2024 update

In an unexpected turn of events, Godzilla Minus One will be making its way back to North American theaters on November 1st, 2024. This celebrated film is returning to honor the 70th anniversary of the original Godzilla (1954).

The re-release will feature both the color version and the black-and-white edition, known as Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color. Additionally, 13 minutes of behind-the-scenes footage will be shown alongside the film. Currently, ticket availability is limited to dates from November 1st to November 3rd-7th, depending on the location. While theaters may choose to extend the run, signs point that the re-release may be looking at a very short window.

GODZILLA MINUS ONE is the highest-grossing Japanese film in US box office history and the #3 top-grossing foreign film in US Box Office History, earning more than $115 million at the global box office. Winner of the Academy Award® for Best Visual Effects, GODZILLA MINUS ONE is the first film in Godzilla’s 70-year franchise history to be recognized by the Academy with a nomination or win.

August 6th, 2024 update

Roughly a month after Toho announced the international release of the “Deluxe Japan Collector’s Edition”, the company has followed it up with the announcement of four additional releases for the 2023 film.

In total these will be:

Unlike the earlier collector’s edition, these will be available at general retail. Managing the physical releases will be Studio Distribution Services (SDS), which is the home video distribution subsidiary of Warner Bros. and Universal Pictures. A release date is presently not referenced with the news.

July 9th, 2024 update

Godzilla Minus One is set to have, what is touted as, its “first home video release in the US” come September. The set will feature Japanese audio with optional English subtitles, with the exception of one of the bonus discs. The release will be a deluxe edition called the “Deluxe Japan Collector’s Edition”. This four disc set mimics what was released in Japan back in May 2024, although will be region free, with English menus and with additional subtitle options. In addition, the “Deluxe Japan Collector’s Edition” will be exclusive to Godzilla.com from the following pre-order link for the price of $65.

June 2nd, 2024 update

Yesterday, Godzilla Minus One became available to stream on Netflix (worldwide excluding Japan and with France coming at a later date). The movie will be available in both a subtitled and English dubbed format. The Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color version is stated to come at a later date this Summer.

In addition, the movie and the Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color version are also available digitally on store fronts including Amazon, Apple iTunes, Google Play, Microsoft, FandangoNOW/VUDU and more. This version found here is the subtitled one only.

Godzilla Minus One Lenticular Poster

February 17th, 2024 update

The official English Godzilla YouTube channel has uploaded a video detailing the process behind the visual effects of the movie. Given how a majority of scenes covered feature Godzilla, some movie spoilers will be present.

January 25th, 2024 update

Godzilla Minus One has been nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Visual Effects category. This makes the film the first Japanese language movie to receive a nomination in this category.

Toho, though, isn’t a stranger to the Academy Awards, in fact the Toho distributed The Boy and the Heron picked up a nomination this year as well in the Animated Feature Film category. Historically, several other movies have come up for nominations, with a few winning, and a full list can be seen here.

To celebrate, Toho has interestingly also started distributing the Ginza version of Godzilla 2023 in the mobile game Godzilla Battle Line. Players have until February 29th, a little over a week before the Oscars, to claim it.

January 18th, 2024 update

As previously reported, a black and white version of Godzilla Minus One was set for a Japanese release, which kicked off this week. Now Toho International is informing us that this version is coming to US theaters as well. The launch for the black and white version, called “GODZILLA MINUS ONE/MINUS COLOR”, is set for Friday, January 26th for the United States. To celebrate, Toho has released a poster, shown below.

The “Minus Color” version will be screened in the US for one week only. In addition, Toho has notified us that February 1st, 2024 will be the date that Godzilla Minus One will leave theaters in the US. That’s in reference to both the black and white version and the normal version of the film, meaning the movie has only a few weeks left at the US box office.

December 24th, 2023 update

Per Toho International, Godzilla Minus One has been shortlisted for Visual Effects for the 2024 Academy Awards. Along with this nomination, the film has also won Best VFX at the Florida Film Critics Association and been nominated for three awards at the North Carolina Film Critics Association including Best Film, Best Foreign Film and Best Visual Effects. The Official Godzilla account also relayed how the film has been presented “for consideration in all categories.”

December 19th, 2023 update

Toho has announced that a black and white version of Godzilla Minus One will be shown in Japanese theaters. Set to debut roughly a month out, on January 14th, 2024, those that attend will also be given a 70th anniversary art board.

December 13th, 2023 update

The film is now celebrating releases in both Japan and the United States, the latter of which where it’s not only beating box office expectations but announced today is also expanding to 2,600 theaters. The production has not just been a monetary success, though, but also a critical one. We’ve been told on behalf of Toho International that the movie has been awarded “Best Use of Visual Effects” by the Chicago Film Critics Association. In addition, it was announced today that the production was also nominated for “Best Foreign Language Film” by The Critics Choice Awards.

As we approach award season, we’ll try to keep this article updated with the latest.

October 21st, 2023 update

Toho has released two new TV spots for the upcoming Godzilla film. The first is a short 15 second advert for the movie.

The second is another 15 second TV spot, this one showcasing a lot more footage around Godzilla himself.

Godzilla Minus One Tickets Go On Sale in the U.S. – Beginning November 3, fans can purchase tickets for the latest installment in the Godzilla film franchise. Written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki and featuring music by Naoki Sato, Godzilla Minus One sees a devastated postwar Japan facing a new threat in the form of Godzilla. As Godzilla emerges, it wreaks havoc and additional destruction on the nation, knocking the country into the negative. The first new Toho Godzilla film since 2016’s Shin Godzilla, Godzilla Minus One stars Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando, and Kuranosuke Sasaki.

Godzilla Day Stream-ALong on Pluto TV – On November 3rd, cozy up on the couch for a movie marathon of fan-favorite Godzilla movies that span the last 69 years on Pluto TV’s Godzilla channel. To celebrate this monstrous event there will be a stream-along at 8pm ET/5pm PT highlighting a beloved Godzilla movie with special guests providing commentary.

One-Day-Only Special Screening of Godzilla 2000 in U.S. Theaters – Fathom Events and Sony Pictures are partnering to bring Godzilla 2000 to select theaters across the U.S. on November 1, just ahead of Godzilla Day. This special event will mark the first time U.S. movie-goers can see Godzilla 2000 on the big screen. Fans can learn more about the event, find out which theaters will be hosting screenings, and purchase tickets here.

Shout! TV Masters of Monsters – Shout! TV, the Shout! Studios streaming service, will celebrate Godzilla Day on November 3 with an encore presentation of MASTERS OF MONSTERS, the 2022 original production television special featuring John Carpenter as he hosts a marathon of four monster films directed by Ishiro Hondo including Gojira (1954), Rodan, Ghidorah, The Three-Headed Monster, and The War of the Gargantuas. Fans of these kaiju films can also join in the Godzilla Day festivities early with Shout! TV’s sister channel TokuSHOUTsu as it runs Godzilla programming all week beginning October 30.

October 3rd, 2023 update

Exactly a month away from its Japanese release, Toho has added three Godzilla Minus One shirts to their Godzilla store. Seen below, the shirts show Godzilla one one side and the logo on the other. These come out on October 8th, but are available for pre-order now. The three shirts can be found in the apparel section of the Godzilla store.

September 15th, 2023 update

Less than two months away from the Japanese release of Godzilla Minus One and promotions continue to trickle in. Today Toho has distributed a full body shot of Godzilla from the movie. The render of Godzilla is the same one used on the poster and in other material, although this image has more destruction showcased and is the first time the full body shot has been shown off.

September 4th, 2023 update

Toho has dropped another trailer for the upcoming movie, both Japanese and United States versions. Below is the US one.

A nugget of new information from the trailer includes that Godzilla Minus One will be a getting an IMAX release in the United States when it debuts on December 1st, 2023. Interestingly, the movie still does not appear to have a rating (PG, PG-13, etc.) for its US release yet.

The Japan release date remains a month before it comes out internationally, set for November 3rd, 2023.

July 14th, 2023 update

Although not directly associated with the film, Tamashii Nations has revealed their S.H. MonsterArts Godzilla Minus One figure. While featured both in the trailer and poster, the figure gives a more direct look at the new Godzilla from various angles, assuming the figure is movie accurate.

July 11th, 2023 update

With a little over 100 days until release, Toho has finally revealed the movie’s title, launched a teaser trailer, and released a poster for the film. The title for the movie will be Godzilla Minus One (ゴジラ‐1.0 / ゴジラマイナスワン). It is still coming to Japanese theaters on November 3rd, 2023. However, in addition it’s also releasing in US theaters on December 1st, 2023, with Toho International distributing it themselves. Below is the teaser trailer, which showcases the first look at Godzilla in the movie:
