A week ahead of the market value update in the Premier League on October 1, _Transfermark_t has adjusted the market values of a number of players in the English Championship. Among the biggest winners are several young talents such as Sunderland's Chris Rigg, and Burnley winger Luca Koleosho who reportedly attracted interest of top-division clubs this summer. Blackburn midfielder Todd Cantwell was among the biggest losers of the update, seeing his value fall by almost 50%. Sunderland rose the most in squad market value, whilst Burnley suffered the biggest downgrade in squad value.
17 year old talent Chris Rigg rises in value by 2900%
Teenager Rigg burst onto scene last season with Sunderland, featuring in each of the last 13 Championship games for the Black Cats last term. Last September, Rigg became the 10th youngest player in the division's history, aged just 16 years and two months when he made his debut, scoring from the bench in a 5-0 win against Southampton. He is also the second youngest player to feature in the Championship this term.
This season he has really shown his value to Sunderland, starting five of their six opening games, and scoring an audacious back-heel in the Black Cats' 1-0 win against Middlesbrough which saw the north east club go second in the table. Rigg went into the update with a market value of just €300k, but now rises a staggering 2900% to €9 million. It makes Rigg the eighth most valuable 17 year old in world football right now, and the most valuable from a 17-year-old player playing outside of his country's top division.
Luca Koleosho hits €12m market value
Newcastle are the latest club to be linked with a move for Burnley winger Koleosho. The American born Italian has been subject of interest from a number of Premier League clubs and teams from across Europe's top five leagues. He scored just one goal in 15 Premier League games last season as a teenager following his €3m move from Espanyol last summer. However he has started the Championship season very brightly, scoring two goals in Burnley's first five games, including the winner against promotion rivals Leeds United.
Koleosho looks set to be one of the top young talents in the division this season. Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano reported that Burnley wanted around €48m for Koleosho in the summer when Wolves came calling, but it seems unlikely clubs would be willing to pay quite that much for the Italian. His market value rises from €7m to €12m in this latest update, making Koleosho the joint 18th most valuable player in the Championship.
At the other end of the scale, new Blackburn signing Cantwell's market value effectively halved. The English midfielder, signed from Rangers this summer for just €1.71m, saw his market value fall from €8.5m to €4.5m in this latest Championship update. The 26 year old has made just two appearances for the Rovers so far, both as a substitute, after a very underwhelming two seasons in Glasgow with Rangers where he scored just 14 goals in 64 games.
Burnley biggest losers, Sunderland biggest winners
The three teams relegated from the Premier League last season in Burnley, Luton and Sheffield United all saw their squad market values fall this September. Despite the +€5m upgrade for Koleosho, Burnley suffered the biggest fall to their market value among all squad's in the Championship, with their value falling by -€9.4m to a new total squad value of €186.7m. However, even at that new lower figure, the Clarets remain the most valuable team in the league ahead of second placed Leeds (€173.08m) and third placed Luton (€101.15m).
In contrast, Sunderland received the biggest squad market value increase of +€10.5m (€8.7m of which came from Rigg) to take the Black Cats' squad to worth €97.83m, making them the fourth most valuable team in the Championship. Hull (+€9.45m in squad value) and Norwich (+7.85m in squad value) also received significant upgrades. Despite their squad market value going up by +€630k Portsmouth remain the least valuable squad in the league at €18.13m.
How Transfermarkt market values work
The Transfermarkt market values are calculated, taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. In general, the Transfermarkt market values are not to be equated with transfer fees.
The goal is not to predict a price but an expected value of a player in a free market. Both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant in determining market values. Examples of this are listed below. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (you can find the detailed market value definition here).
