Mercer County names Carpenter Cup softball roster (original) (raw)
The Mercer County roster has been announced for the Carpenter Cup of Softball, which will take place from Monday through Wednesday at FDR Park in South Philadelphia.
There are 16 teams in a tournament that is for underclassmen who have not yet committed to a college. The tournament begins with pool play and is followed by a single-elimination format.
Although the team has only three outfielders, one shortstop and does not include who many consider to be the top pitchers who were eligible, it does have its strengths.
It’s certainly set at catcher with Robbinsville’s Caroline Kapferer, Lawrence’s Madison Spiteri and Steinert’s Francesca Castellano, who will be playing in the state final on Friday when the Spartans take on North Hunterdon in the Group 3 state championship game at Seton Hall.
Kapferer, for instance, recently completed a banner junior season in which she batted 493 average and easily led Robbinsville with a team-high five home runs and 38 RBIs.
Lawrence and Steinert have the most players on the Mercer roster with three apiece. One team with some capable underclassmen that is not well represented is Notre Dame with just one player on the roster. Nottingham/Hamilton has no players on the roster despite having a young team with a group of up-and-coming players.
The area will also be represented by players on the Burlington County, Philadelphia Catholic and Suburban One/Bicentennial Athletic League teams.
Mercer is in Bracket D and will play its three pool games on Tuesday against Olympic Colonial, Pioneer Athletic and Berks County teams.
