I stayed on Zumami Island for three days and had a fabulous time here! The island is absolutely beautiful! I took the two hour ferry ride over from Naha which was pleasant. I took my bike with which was cheap. I suggest brining a bike as it's a great way to get around the island. But a few of the beaches are within walking distance from town. There is so much to do and see here. I primarily went to the beaches for snorkeling and saw sea turtles and a lot of other marine wildlife. The Kerama Blue color of the water was gorgeous, I was even here on cloudy days and it was still amazing. I really hope I will be back here for some more snorkeling and diving. It's easy to get to from Naha, so why not visit?

Fab sea kayaking with Zamami's Kerama Kayaking.

Great boats, equipment, and excellent service from Miami, who prepared the boats, supervised, taught, helped, cooked Okinawan lunch on remote beaches, and helped us to snorkel the corals. Her English helped a lot, with my limited Japanese..

Did 3 day tours, each stunning and great kayaking.

Zamami is tiny, 600 people, village atmosphere, buzzing in summer I heard, but beautifully peaceful in January. Enough nice restaurants, bars, izakayas. Good e-bike rental to tour the very hilly landscape.

Roundtrip 50-minute choppy speed boat 'Queen Zamami' from Tomarin Ferry Terminal #7 at 9 am/3 pm (buy tickets at least 30 minutes before on the day - open at 8 am) for 6080 yen, leaving Zamami at 16:20 so you get 6 hours on the island, enough time to walk to 2 beaches and 4 view points around the island; also a 2-hour ferry available leaving later for 2000 yen less - schedules differ according to season.

All beaches were virtually completely deserted as it's off season so almost no shops were open bar a few vending machines and a local grocery shop near the port so a good idea to have food with you. I'd imagine things are quite different from April to October. Water's a bit cold as it's 20 degrees Celcius but totally swimmable after the initial shock. On a weekday late December we basically had pristine white sand beaches all to ourselves - Furuzamami Beach was a little nicer than Ama Beach although both absolutely gorgeous. Amazing views from Takatsuki Viewpoint nearby although other viewpoints on the west/north (Kaminohara & Unajino /Inazaki) offer very different yet still beautiful scenery.

Weather changes quickly throughout the day so best to have a cardigan this season. Not terribly well signposted but fairly straightforward roads, plus there's cell reception for the most part so can follow Google map's dot. Pricey bicycle rental available but there are lots of slopes so probably easier to walk or take the bus that runs infrequently.

This two day trip has been an amazing and relaxing time for my family. This is a beautiful island and well worth the two hour boat ride to get there.

I think the best way is to choose Queen Zamami fast boat from Naha to Zamami. You have to go by monorail to the Miebashi station, take exit 2, go along the small river to the main road and turn right. After about 300m you will see on the left the port building - see photo. Just near the entrance you can see 2 agencies, on the right this is Queen Zamami ferry. Open from 8AM, the boat leaves port at 9:00 and back from Zamami at 4:20PM. There you can buy a ticket and then go to the wharf - see the map. This is about 10 mins by walk. At the cash desk they are accepting credit cards, (some informations says that not but the payment terminal they have). There in no ATM, only money changing machine. The nearest ATM is in Family Mart 100 m back (on the way to port you see it on the right side). The price of return trip is 5970 yen/adult. The Queen Zamami needs 50 mins to Zamami. You can also to buy a round trip around Zamami to watch whales, the good new is that if there are no whales (I think they are searching them by radar) then the trip is cancelled and you do not pay for nothing..the bad new is that newer know if the Queen Zamami will go or not because it depends on the weather conditions so they decide every morning if yes or no.

I visited this island on 9 May 2019 by taking the speed boat, Queen Zamami, departed at 9:00am from the Tomari Port. Price was JPY3140. Normal boat would be departed on 10:00am at JPY2120. There were lot of clean and charming beaches and travelers could either take the local transportation or walk to those clean and charming beaches.

Furuzamami Beach at Zamami Island is beautiful and worth going to see and enjoy. If you are getting here from Naha’s Tomari Port, take into account the long commute time (2 hours one way on the standard ferry and about half that time on the Queen ferry). On the Monday that I visited, they only offered the standard ferry option and they only had one ferry going to Zamami (at 9:30am) and one ferry returning to Naha that day (leaves Zamami at 3pm). This means that if you’re going to the island for a day trip, your time is limited to 3.5 hours which is not much considering you may want to spend time eating lunch and you want to get back to the ferry at least 15 minutes before it leaves Zamami Port. Therefore, if you’re staying in Okinawa for a few day, it’s worth considering staying overnight at the island and taking a ferry back the following morning so that you can enjoy more than just Furuzamami Beach, as the island has much more to offer.

You can walk around the island if you have the stamina to trek up hills and the time to do so but bike if you want to save time
