Mt. Iwaki rises alone from near sea- level, making it seem much larger than it really is. The views are stunning, and you cn see it on a clear day from the Aomori bridge and from the ferry to Hakodate, even.

Approaching the town of Hirosaki, one thing dominates your view: Mount Iwaki. It rises alone from the plain, a beautiful composite volcano. If you can get to the Tsura-no-Mai bridge, the mountain makes a lovely site reflected in the lake. A bus ride out to the Iwaki Yama Jinja won't give you the same views, but will give a sense of the power and worship people have felt for this mountain. This shrine also has a spring of delicious snowmelt water.

We visited the park on a cloudy day and it was quite difficult to view Mt. Iwaki at a distance clearly. Anyway, we took a few photos at last.

The mountain is everything you expect to see in a "Japanese montin." It is symmetrical, snow capped, pretty an mysterious. It looks like all the mountains you see in their old paintings. Mount Fuji may be a little better, but this is a fine imitation!

Luckily it was a clear day during my visit, so the autumn foliage and views from the top of the ropeway were splendid. The best part was actually driving up and down the Tsugaru-Iwaki Skyline toll road. It's about 1,600 to 1,800 yen if I remember correctly.

During our visit to Hirosaki Park, we have the chance to see Mt. Iwaki at a distance. Not yet snow-capped in Oct.. Have to wait until late Nov. Nice view that attracted many visitors despite the payment of yen 310 as entrance fee to the castle was necessary.

Another advantage of entering Hirosaki Castle compound was the chance to see Mt. Iwaki. During our visit there by late April this year, we still managed to view the beautiful snow-caped mountain from the castle despite the weather on that day was not that steady. Many visitors there also took the chance to snapshoot the mountain.

Only saw this mountain from my hotel window but Hirosaki is surrounded by mountains and virgin forest of beech.

The climb to the top isn't for the faint hearted, the army trains on it. Passed on that and turned right and did a pleasant ridge walk.

This mountain dominates the whole area, and we tried to get up it after visiting Hirosaki. Sadly, there had been snow the night before (only rained in Aomori city) so the road was closed to vehicles without studded snow tires. Still got some great pictures.
