More than 170 mountain huts run by the Austrian Alpine Club provide hikers and walkers with protection from the elements, a warm bed and a hot meal. While some are located high in the mountains and serve as ideal base camps during long hikes, others are further down in the valley and can be easily reached by families with children for a fun day out. The region also has a number of self-accommodation huts where guests must provide their own food.

A hearty meal and a warm bed are the basics available at every hut run by the Austrian Alpine Club, while the more luxurious ones offer showers, mobile phone reception and even touchless payment at 3,000 metres above sea level. Hut-to-hut hikes are a popular way of exploring the stunning landscape of Tirol, safe in the knowledge that a hot meal and cold beer is waiting at the end of a long day. Huts can be found throughout the region, from the Lechtal, Ötztal and Stubai Alps in the west to the Karwendel Mountains near Innsbruck and Tux Alps in the east.
