Mountain Pasture Hike

Bodenalm

Situated at an elevation of 1700 metres, Bodenalm is an idyllic place nestled in a remote side valley of Zillergrund at the Zillertal Alps Nature Park. Zillergrund is the easternmost side valley of Inner Zillertal and stretches from South Tirol’s Ahrntal at the Austria-Italy border to Mayrhofen. The past is still alive at the authentic Bodenalm hut, which can only be reached on foot. The 500 hectares of alpine pastures around the hut serve as grazing grounds for roughly 60 Tirolean grey cows. Bodenalm Alpine Pasture Hut gives access to the high mountain nature park’s primordial world of receding glaciers, wildflower carpeted meadows, and purple mountains majesties. From the hut, there are stunning views of the valley end and of mighty Grundschartner Glacier. Picture time! Play with your camera settings and try to capture Bodenalm in the morning or evening light. Another picture-worthy place is the picturesque and tiny “Maria Schnee” Church that is located at the trailhead of this walk, next to Häusling Inn. Everyone climbing on the high mountains of the Zillertal Alps Nature Park is struck by the beautiful and delicate green carpets of wild orchids, plume thistles, ostrich fern, rusty-leaved alpenrose, red and black elder, cottongrass, and old-growth stone pines.

Trail description

Trailhead for this wonderful walk to the Bodenalm hut is at the Gasthof Häusling inn in Zillergrund. Ride bus no. 8328 from Mayrhofen to reach the Gasthof Häusling. From there, take the right fork across a wooden bridge and walk toward the power station and the Ziller river. Continue along a paved road for a short while until you reach an old farmstead. From there, a narrow and well-marked footpath climbs up to the Bodenalm hut. At some sections, this steep trail has stone steps; sturdy boots are essential, since the ground is rocky and often loose underfoot.
