When climate turns violent | UCA News Series (original) (raw)
In the last century, scientists began to warn that human activity was pumping “greenhouse gases” into the atmosphere at such a rate that disastrous climate changes were in store unless we drastically reduced the production of such gases.
But to do so would mean restructuring the global economy and our lifestyles based on the burning of fossil fuels. Too many people who should have led in mitigating, if not preventing, global disaster found it easier to deny the findings of the experts.
And so, the planet continued to overheat and now the disastrous effects of that selfishness and shortsightedness are upon us. It is too late to prevent disaster.
As with most disasters, those who most suffer the effects of climate change are the poor, men and women whose lives are upended by violent storms, droughts, floods, ocean encroachment on coastal areas, salinization of ground water, wildfires, spreading disease and the other effects the scientists warned us of.
It is apparently too late to head off those effects. However, it is not too late to respond to them. Christians throughout Asia are attempting to mitigate some of the effects of climate change and are serving those whose lives and livelihoods have been harmed.
The newest series from the UCA News network of reporters will introduce you to the ways Asia’s people of faith are responding When Climate Turns Violent.
UCA News, as a responsible organization, takes this series with the utmost seriousness because it is an issue that affects everyone.
Our reporters have travelled to several regions and talked to people who are hit by the consequences of climate change. This series is a result of their dedication and hard work.
Even though the original articles come to you for free, producing them requires financial support.
