About

Born in Warren, Ohio, Dave Grohl and his parents moved to Springfrield, Virginia when he was a child. Dave’s mother and father – a respected journalist and special assistant to U.S. Senator Robert Taft Jr. – divorced when he was 7, and Dave was largely raised by his mother.

Before he was a teenager, Grohl began playing music, teaching himself the guitar and playing in bands with friends. He would also eventually teach himself to play the drums, citing Rush drummer Neil Peart as a major influence.

In the mid-to-late 80s, Grohl joined and toured with rock band Scream before they broke up in 1990. Shortly after that, Grohl was introduced to Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic, whose band Nirvana was looking for a drummer.

Grohl joined the band and, in 1991, the band released their album Nevermind, which is widely considered to be one of the best albums of all-time. With songs like “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and “Come As You Are,” it catapulted Grohl and the band to superstardom.

Nirvana would release a follow-up album, 1993’s In Utero, before lead singer Cobain died by suicide in April 1994. Months after Cobain’s death, Grohl founded the band Foo Fighters and served as the group’s lead singer and guitarist.

Still active and touring to this day, Grohl and Foo Fighters have released a total of 11 studio albums and won 15 Grammys. In March 2022, the band’s drummer Taylor Hawkins was found dead in his Colombia hotel room with ten substances in his system at the time of his death. In 2023, Josh Freese replaced Hawkins as the band’s drummer.

Grohl was married to his first wife, Jennifer Leigh Youngblood, from 1994 to 1997. He married his second wife, Jordyn Blum in 2003 and the couple are still together. Grohl and Blum share daughters Violet, 18, Harper, 15, and Ophelia, 10.

In September 2024, Grohl announced he had “recently become the father of a new baby, born outside of my marriage.”. At the time of this announcement, Grohl did not named the mother of the newborn

“I plan to be a loving and supportive parent to her,” Grohl said in a statement via Instagram. “I love my wife and my children, and I am doing everything I can to regain their trust and earn their forgiveness.”
