40. “Perfume” (2013)

Fans and critics collectively agree that Britney Jean is Spears’ worst album to date, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that its shaky second single ranks the same. To put it bluntly, this perfume stinks.

39. “Pretty Girls” (feat. Iggy Azalea) (2015)

If this jarring rehash of Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy” were a Friends episode, it would be titled “The One That Wasn’t Even Good Enough to Include on an Album.”

Credit:

38. “Ooh La La” (2013)

OK, hear Us out: This isn’t a bad song, per se, but Spears can do *so* much better than cutting something for the Smurfs 2 soundtrack. (No offense to those little blue guys.)

Credit:

37. “I Wanna Go” (2011)

This one is catchy, carefree and, well, so beyond AutoTuned at points that it could be Ozzy Osbourne singing for all we know.

Credit:

36. “Scream & Shout” (with Will.i.am) (2012)

“You are now, now rockin’ with Will.i.am and Britney, bitch” is the “It’s Britney, bitch” sequel we never knew we needed. Plus, Spears’ faux British accent on this overproduced feature is as fierce as can be.

Credit:

35. “Someday (I Will Understand)” (2005)

This acoustic ballad — one of the few singles she has had a hand in writing — dropped around the same time Spears announced her first pregnancy. The ode to her baby-to-be is sweet and simple but far from career-defining.

Credit:

34. “Outrageous” (2004)

It’s a shame Spears injured her knee while filming the “Outrageous” music video. Who knows, maybe it would have bumped this irresistible and funky tune up a few ranks.

Credit:

33. “From the Bottom of My Broken Heart” (1999)

This teenybopper torch song is no “Sometimes,” but it’s a classic in Spears’ catalog that some fans unfairly push to the side.

Credit:

32. “3” (2009)

Spears wasn’t lying when she sang “I’m not that innocent” all those years ago. This ditty about a threesome may be generic AF, but it’s undeniably catchy. Peter, Paul and Mary will agree.

Credit:

31. “I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll” (2002)

While it may be hard to imagine Spears jamming out to the likes of Elvis Presley and Chuck Berry, she and her Crossroads character turn doubters into believers with this fiery remake of Joan Jett’s 1975 hit.

Credit:

30. “Radar” (2009)

Spears loved this bouncy techno track so much that she included it on two studio albums. So, fans have no choice but to trust her instinct, right?

Credit:

29. “Make Me...” (feat. G-Eazy) (2016)

Spears’ chemistry with G-Eazy on this sultry R&B slow-jam is palpable. It’s a far cry from anything she released prior, so the Britney Army rightfully welcomed it with open arms on the heels of the disaster that was “Pretty Girls.”

Credit:

28. “I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman” (2002)

This somewhat cheesy yet introspective power ballad helped redefine Spears’ career as she made the transition to adulthood in the public eye. And who could forget that stunning Arizona backdrop in the music video?

Credit:

27. “Don’t Let Me Be the Last to Know” (2001)

Spears showcases her soulful, unwavering vocals on this well-executed ballad, which — fun fact! — is cowritten by Shania Twain. What’s not to love?

Credit:

26. “If U Seek Amy” (2009)

Britney Spears: Princess of Pop, Grammy winner, lucrative Las Vegas act and ... wordplay master? On this cleverly carnal number, Spears exudes confidence with a double entendre that infamously had Megyn Kelly shaking in her boots.

Credit:

25. “Break the Ice” (2008)

This thumping, multi-layered bop easily could have been Spears’ comeback single had “Gimme More” not been so dang good.

Credit:

24. “Circus” (2008)

As ringmaster, Spears takes center stage and cracks her whip (literally) on this monstrous, brilliantly structured hit. Come one, come all.

Credit:

23. “Me Against the Music” (feat. Madonna) (2003)

The Queen of Pop passes the torch to Spears on this upbeat, tongue-twister of an anthem with a chorus so fresh it could still be a hit today.

Credit:

22. “Boys” (2002)

Listen to this one without clapping along and shaking what your mama gave ya. We dare you. (Just make sure it’s the original and not Pharrell Williams’ lesser “Co-Ed Remix,” which omits the euphoric bridge.)

Credit:

21. “Born to Make You Happy” (1999)

Yes, the lyrics to this teen-pop ballad about a girl all but worshipping her boyfriend may not have aged well, but there is no question that the track has some of Spears’ best vocals.

Credit:

20. “Criminal” (2008)

The only thing criminal here is that this unbelievably captivating and melodic midtempo was not a smash hit. After all these years, the flute melody is still stuck in fans’ heads.

Credit:

19. “Do Somethin’” (2005)

Nobody does attitude like Spears, and this badass electronic jam is a prime example. Just don’t stare at her too long or she might do somethin’.

Credit:

18. “Piece of Me” (2007)

Extra, extra, this just in: Spears’ deeply personal, defiant, middle finger-waving message to critics may be the closest thing fans ever get to an autobiography — and that’s just fine.

Credit:

17. “Sometimes” (1999)

Spears’ über-contagious sophomore single is the epitome of bubblegum pop, a genre that unjustly got a bad rap. The key change is what dreams are made of.

Credit:

16. “Till the World Ends” (2011)

Spears’ surefire, club-ready anthem is so massive it could shake an entire football stadium — that is, ahem, if the NFL ever gives her the Super Bowl Halftime Show.

Credit:

15. “Lucky” (2000)

This tale about a young woman who has fame and fortune but still struggles behind closed doors tugs at the heartstrings. Interestingly enough, it foreshadowed Spears’ own life in the spotlight.

Credit:

14. “Womanizer” (2008)

Spears is so much more than a woman scorned on this well-crafted girl-power tune with an unforgettable hook. Take that, K-Fed.

Credit:

13. “Work Bitch” (2013)

This synth-heavy EDM banger is exactly the type of music Spears should be making two decades into her career. Her militaristic speak-singing is full of ‘tude, just like the beat drop.

Credit:

12. “Slumber Party” (2016)

Spears’ modern, slinky, ad-lib-heavy bedroom jam is a grand slam and without question her best song in years. The Tinashe remix is almost too hot to handle.

Credit:

11. “Hold It Against Me” (2011)

Lyrically, “Hold It Against Me” is a dud, but the thumping electropop instrumental takes it to another stratosphere. Plus, the effervescent chorus is one of Spears’ strongest of all time.

Credit:

10. “Stronger” (2000)

Spears was ahead of her years when she released this unapologetically empowering track. “I’m not your property as from today” still holds up as a new decade approaches.

Credit:

9. “(You Drive Me) Crazy” (1999)

This quasi-dorky dance track can be easily summed up using just three words: pure ear candy. The “Stop Remix” isn’t half bad either.

Credit:

8. “My Prerogative” (2004)

Spears channels the energy of her idols Prince, Madonna and Janet Jackson on her frustratingly underrated cover of Bobby Brown’s 1988 firestorm. It’s eerie how relevant the rebellious lyrics are to her life today.

Credit:

7. “Overprotected” (2001)

This angsty, headstrong single was Spears’ first foray into standing her ground and pushing aside societal expectations. It’s hard to believe she recorded it at just 20 years old.

Credit:

6. “Everytime” (2004)

Spears famously wrote this gut-wrenching ballad at the piano — like “Someday (I Will Understand)” — on the heels of her breakup from Justin Timberlake. The end result is beautifully angelic and unlike anything else in her discography.

Credit:

5. “Oops!...I Did It Again” (2000)

Only Spears could craft a song bizarrely centered around a spoken _Titanic_-inspired verse and turn it into a pop masterpiece that takes listeners to another planet.

Credit:

4. “I’m a Slave 4 U” (2001)

As her first of many reinventions to come, this breathy, jungly and sensual triumph is arguably the most important piece of the post-Mouseketeer puzzle. It’s three minutes and 24 seconds of pure python-carrying bliss.

Credit:

With its indelible hook, Spears’ all-pop debut is the cornerstone of career. Name another newcomer who came out swinging the way she did. We’ll wait.

Credit:

2. “Gimme More” (2007)

Somehow, some way, Spears managed to make one of the most ingenious songs of her career at the darkest point in her life. It’s slick, decadent and begs to be played at full volume.

Credit:

1. “Toxic” (2004)

No one can deny that this boundary-pushing single is Spears’ magnum opus. It’s fresh, fun and intoxicating (no pun intended). Plus, it scored the pop legend her first — and, to date, only — Grammy. Not too shabby for a little girl from Kentwood, Louisiana.
