Eleonore Frankl née Schwindt (1925–2026)

On June 10, 2026, Eleonore ("Elly") Frankl passed away in Vienna at the age of 100.

Born on November 6, 1925, she grew up in modest circumstances and became known for her warmth, vitality, independence, and forthrightness. During the Second World War she worked as a nurse in the dental department of the Vienna Policlinic. There, in 1945, she met the physician and psychiatrist Viktor Frankl who had just returned from the concentration camps, having lost his first wife, his parents, and his brother.

The couple married in 1947 and remained together for fifty years. Throughout these decades she was not only a devoted wife and mother but also a constant companion in the work that helped establish logotherapy and existential analysis around the world. Numerous books, lecture tours, and international journeys were made possible through her encouragement, practical support, a nd unwavering dedication.

In recognition of her contributions to logotherapy, she was awarded honorary doctorates by North Park University in Chicago (1993) and the Moscow Institute of Psychoanalysis.

After her husband's death in 1997, she assumed responsibility for preserving and promoting their shared legacy. For nearly three decades she remained a trusted source of guidance and support for scholars, students, and institutions dedicated to the continuing development of logotherapy.

She will be remembered for her kindness, generosity, humor, and strength of character. Her long life touched many people, and her memory will remain alive in the hearts of her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
