Advanced Aerial Mobility: Taking Transport to New Heights (original) (raw)

How Advanced Aerial Mobility Takes Transport to New Heights

According to the World Bank, 70% of the world’s population will live in cities by 2050. With traffic and overcrowding already causing issues, many municipalities and urban leaders are seeking faster and more environmentally friendly transport options.

So, Visual Capitalist has partnered with Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust to explore whether advanced aerial mobility could take urban transport to new heights.

What Is Advanced Aerial Mobility?

This concept involves using aircraft to transport people and goods efficiently and sustainably within a city’s airspace.

However, rather than using loud and expensive helicopters or jet-propelled aircraft, aerial mobility companies are exploring an innovative transport design called an eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing) aircraft.

What Makes eVTOLs Special?

Essentially, an eVTOL is a hybrid between a helicopter and an EV. These aircraft have all the benefits of high-speed, vertical take-off and landing. But they don’t generate any direct CO2 emissions and make about as much noise as an average conversation between two people:

Noise Made by… Noise Level
Rustling Leaves 40 dBA
eVTOL in Flight* 45 dBA
Conversation 60 dBA
Joby Aircraft at Takeoff 65 dBA
Vacuum Cleaner 75 dBA
Freight Train 85 dBA
Helicopter 90 dBA

Aerial mobility company Joby Aviation already plans to transport people from Manhattan in New York City to JFK Airport in just seven minutes, a journey that would typically take 49 minutes by car.

The Advanced Aerial Mobility Market is Taking Off

Considering that many more people will live in cities over the next few decades and the many benefits of advanced aerial mobility, it is no wonder that the sector’s market value could grow significantly between now and 2030:

Year Advanced Aerial Mobility Market Value
2023 US$8.2B
2024P US$11.1B
2025P US$15.0B
2026P US$20.3B
2027P US$27.4B
2028P US$37.0B
2029P US$50.1B
2030P US$67.7B

Tomorrow’s Transport

Advanced aerial mobility is a revolutionary concept that can potentially transform urban transportation. Joby Aviation is a leading company in this field, developing quiet and fast electric aircraft poised to become the future of urban transport.

Based in California, Joby Aviation is constructing a 140-acre production facility in Dayton, Ohio, which can produce over 500 electrified aircraft annually. The company is expanding its operations through strategic partnerships with the U.S. Air Force, Uber, NASA, and Delta Airlines.
