Ruby Annotation
Ruby Annotation becomes a W3C Recommendation and part of XHTML 1.1 on May 31, 2001. See also Press Release .
Ruby are small character annotations, sometimes added to the characters of an ideographic script like Japanese, to clarify the pronunciation (and/or the meaning) of those characters. They are usually put in a very small font, along the side of the ideogram in vertical text, or at the top in horizontal text. (In fact, "ruby" is the word with which, traditionally, British printers refer to an 8pt type face.)

For ruby styling, there is the CSS3 module: Ruby Working Draft (work in progress).
