Dr Michael Mosley shares the one food to eat every day to 'reverse' ageing (original) (raw)

Dr Michael Mosley, a well-known figure in the weight loss community, has recently shifted his attention towards the way that our diet influences how swiftly we age. Last year the popular TV doctor has wrapped up filming for a new series which sees him diving deep into the world of ageing and investigating just how integral food choices are in this process.

Answering some of life's biggest questions, Dr Mosley sought help from global leaders in ageing research to uncover methods that could potentially put a pause or even rewind our biological clocks. The results were shocking; our genes have only a minimal role in the ageing process.

However, lifestyle choices stood out as the dominant factor. One of the key factors within lifestyle that influence ageing is your gut health or microbiome. Properly maintaining it can do wonders for your health, including pushing your life expectancy past the average.

Further explaining his findings, Dr Mosley wrote in the Daily Mail: "We know that what, and how much, you eat play key roles in whether you stay healthy or not - but what seems to be equally important is the impact this food has on your gut microbiome, the mix of bacteria, viruses and fungi, which live in your intestines."

Backing up his claims was a recent study carried out by scientists at the Guangxi Academy of Sciences in China and published in Nature Ageing. The researchers studied the microbiomes of over 1,500 individuals aged between 20 and 100.

Dr Mosley explains the research: "They found that the healthy centenarians (those least troubled by age-related disease) had a very diverse mix of bugs in their guts, with particularly high levels of a bacterial species called Bacteroidetes. This bug has previously been linked to slimness, and is present in far smaller amounts in the guts of people who are overweight."

Eating lots of different plants can make your immune system stronger and help fight inflammation that can cause cancer and heart problems. Experts say this is good for your tummy's health.

The three types of food that Dr Mosley advises we eat for a healthier gut are all fermented, such as sauerkraut, kefir, and kimchi. Eating this every day can improve your gut health and could push your life expectancy past the average.
