Mum who found lump months after giving birth told there's nothing doctors can do (original) (raw)

A young mum was diagnosed with an extremely rare form of cancer after finding a lump when her newborn daughter Vienna was just two months old. Nikita Jones noticed a lump between her breasts last summer.

It was first treated as an abscess but when antibiotics didn't clear the lump, Nikita was sent to the breast clinic. She was eventually told in August 2023 she had an extremely rare form of sarcoma - a soft tissue cancer.

Nikita, 22, was told she was just one of only two people in the UK who had this form of cancer. Speaking on her behalf, Nikita's mum Vicki Hughes described how the discovery led to a year of hell.

Following her diagnosis, Nikita had to wait for surgery while titanium ribs were created as doctors planned to take away part of her rib cage. She underwent gruelling surgery in October 2023 where she had a double mastectomy and part of her chest plate removed.

Doctors were fortunately able to leave her ribs and Nikita, from Port Talbot, was sent to London for a proton beam therapy treatment for six weeks. Vicki described this as extremely difficult as it left Nikita with burns.

In March this year the mum was told she was cancer free, but in the months afterward Nikita developed a pain and swelling in her legs. She was also suffering with a nasty cough and repeated chest infections. For the latest health and Covid news, sign up to our newsletter here

A shadow on her lung was discovered, which doctors said was likely inflammation from the treatment, but Nikita was sent for a CT scan. "She didn't want that scan, she was nervous then, I think she knew," mum Vicki said.

The CT scan showed that the cancer had returned in her lungs and devastatingly doctors said there was nothing further she could do. Nikita was told without treatment she would have six months to live, and with chemotherapy, she'd have around 16 months.

The family have been left devastated and are desperate for Nikita to make as many memories with her daughter Vienna as possible. Nikita's friend has set up a GoFundMe page which has raised £3,000 in less than 24 hours to make all of this possible. You can make a donation here.

Before finding out the news, Nikita had moved into her first home with her daughter and boyfriend Shaun Williams in the hope of a fresh start. Vicki said: "There is just no words, I am lost for words," about how the family were feeling at this point in time.

Nikita has planned a f*** you cancer party for this weekend and hopes to spend as much time as possible creating memories with her friends and family over the coming months.

Vicki said she has a "whole village" behind her supporting her, and has been given incredible support from her nan Catherine and two sisters Jordanna and Tanisha, as well as all her family and friends.
