'Drunk Elvis fans' rumbled after removing famous 'willy mirror' from Welsh bar (original) (raw)

The owners of a Welsh bar were left devastated when they realised a famous piece of furniture had been swiped from under their noses. The Cheetah Bar and Grill in Porthcawl, known for it's eccentric decor, had one specific item that regularly attracted people to the venue - a penis-shaped mirror.

The mirror, aptly named "Willy", was removed from the bar last month, leaving the owners and regular customers bereft. But they have now got to the bottom of what happened, and the mirror has been returned to its rightful place.

The mystery began during the last weekend of September, a time when Porthcawl is buzzing with visitors for the annual Elvis Festival, attracting people from across the world. Whilst the Cheetah bar was lively on the morning of Sunday, September 29, the famous phallic mirror was taken from the women's bathroom.

The owners of the bar, sisters Annette and Amanda and their cousin Margarette were "very upset" when the £280 Seletti mirror was spotted as missing. The mirror has become a popular attraction in Porthcawl, with people visiting the bar just to take photos in the penis-shaped mirror.

Sharing the theft on social media, customers began the campaign "free Willy" to help return the famous mirror back to the bar. Annette was shocked when they looked at the CCTV footage two days later to find that two men had gone into the woman's toilets and taken the mirror out of the bar.

The men were then seen heading back into the venue to sit at the table they had previously booked, to enjoy the rest of their day at the bar. Using the contact number on the booking, Annette was able to trace the pair back to London where they had kept the mirror.

At first denying it, the men admitted that they had taken the mirror whilst intoxicated and promised to return it after police action was threatened. To the joy of the owners and people online, Willy was returned to the establishment on Monday, October 7 with only a slight crack in the glass. Fans of the unusual mirror have since suggested a welcome home party.

Many shared they delight that the mirror had been returned, as well as their confusion as to how the mirror was taken without being seen. One person commented: "Fantastic news!!!! So pleased Willy has been found and is back where he belongs!!!!"

Whilst another shared: "Yay!! It's back, think we should have a party to celebrate what you all think??" For the latest Welsh news delivered to your inbox sign up to our newsletter

Owners of the popular seaside bar and restaurant have decided not to contact the police as the mirror was returned. They are glad it has been returned and will be put back up so people can continue to enjoy it and take pictures with it.
