Fire breaks out at 150-year-old Grade II listed Welsh chapel (original) (raw)

A large fire has ripped through a historic Grade II listed chapel in a Welsh village. Firefighters were called to Capel y Pil in North Cornelly, Bridgend, on Friday night.

Images captured at the scene show the building well alight, with flames engulfing the space inside and rising from the chapel’s roof. South Wales Fire and Rescue Service has been asked to comment on the extent of the fire but has confirmed that it was called to the scene of the fire on Ffordd yr Eglwys, North Cornelly, on Friday.

The fire service asked people to avoid the area and requested that nearby residents keep windows and doors closed. According to one resident, the fire started shortly after 7.30pm on Friday and was extinguished shortly after 9pm. For the latest Bridgend news, sign up to our newsletter here

No cause has yet been established by the fire service, who will now be investigating what started the blaze. The disused chapel was sold at auction in 2022 for £78,000. It was built almost 150 years ago in 1876 and is thought to be one of the oldest buildings in the area. It has been granted Grade II listed status and it once welcomed generations of Sunday worshippers.
