There were long delays on the M4 around Newport after all traffic was held eastbound as a result of a crash. Traffic cameras showed gridlocked traffic on the motorway around junction 24 for Coldra trailing back miles. At one point there were over 60 minute delays in the area.

According to traffic monitoring system INRIX the traffic was held at around 6.45am on Wednesday, October 9. Live traffic maps showed miles of queues in the area during rush hour.

All lanes have now reopened but severe congestion remains in the area with queues of up to 60 minutes. As well as on the motorway itself, there are also delays through the A48 as traffic looks for alternative routes.

Gwent Police issue update

Gwent Police have issued an update on the earlier crash.

A spokesperson for the force said: "We received a report of a road traffic collision on the M4, near junction 24, at around 6.30am on Wednesday 9 October.

"Officers attended to assist with traffic management. The collision involved a car and a lorry. No injuries were reported."

There are now severe delays and one lane is closed due to recovery work after an accident on the M4 Eastbound at junction24 A449 (Coldra).

Congestion is now trailing to j29 (A48(M) interchange). There are delays on the A48 through Newport as traffic seeks alternative route. Travel time is 60 minutes.

Lane one (of two) on the M4 is closed.

Delays of 30 minutes

There are now delays of around 30 minutes in the area as a result of the incident. All traffic was temporarily held on the M4 eastbound at junction 24.

Now, one lane remains closed while the incident is dealt with. According to traffic monitoring system INRIX delays in the area have reached 30 minutes with queues trailing back to junction 27.
