Man dies in hospital after suspected drug misuse (original) (raw)

A 59-year-old man died in hospital after suspected drug misuse. An inquest was opened after the death of Alan Leonard Walters, from Newport, was confirmed on September 8.

In a Newport coroner's court hearing, coroner Rose Farmer said Mr Walters had been taken to the Grange hospital in Cwmbran by ambulance. "Paramedics relayed that he appeared intoxicated," said Ms Farmer. "He became unresponsive en route and showed no signs of life before admission to the hospital.

"CPR was performed and a rhythm returned but he remained unconscious. Mr Walters received treatment for several days but a decision was made to withdraw life-sustaining treatment. An inquest is being opened because there is reason to suspect a drug-associated death."

The provisional cause of death was given as hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy — a brain injury linked to the loss of oxygen or blood flow— cardiorespiratory arrest and drug misuse. High blood pressure and type two diabetes were also given as factors. Ms Farmer adjourned the case to next March for further enquiries to be made.
