Met Office issues new thunderstorm warning for parts of Wales (original) (raw)

More heavy rain is on the way to parts of Wales as another thunderstorm warning is issued. Parts of south east Wales are covered by the yellow warning from the Met Office.

It says that showers and thunderstorms will north and east across southern Britain through the afternoon and well into the evening, before gradually clearing from the west.

It is the second day in a row there has been a thunderstorm warning for parts of Wales as a series of lows bring unsettled weather to the region.

The warning, which is in place until 3am on Wednesday, says: "Whilst some areas will miss these, where they develop 20-30 mm of rain within 2-3 hours, with a small chance that a few places could receive 40-50 mm over a longer period - particularly across the southeast of the area this evening. Hail and lightning will be additional hazards, with a risk of temporary hail accumulations in places. In addition, heavy showers and thunderstorms will be associated with strong and gusty winds in the south of the warning area at times with 40 mph gusts possible."

The areas in Wales covered by the warning are Monmouthshire, Newport and Torfaen.

What to expect:

The Met Office forecast for Wales on Wednesday says that any low cloud and fog will lift to leave a day of "sunshine and showers", which will be lighter than the showers on Tuesday.

The outlook for Thursday to Saturday says: "Drier on Thursday with a few showers in the west. Largely fine on Friday with sunshine, with further showers into Saturday. Turning colder with patchy fog and frost possible overnight."
