One of Newport's most well-attended events has been cancelled this year due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Newport Food Festival, due to take place on October 3, has been cancelled due to health and safety concerns, according to a statement by Newport council.

"It is with great sadness that we have taken the decision to cancel one of our most well-attended city events," said Jane Mudd, leader of Newport city council.

Newport Food Festival showcases more than 75 stalls selling a wide range of products from award-winning suppliers, with more than 75% being Welsh producers.

This year's festival would have been the 10th anniversary, with the council saying it was "planning one of the best events yet."

The council stated that similar events have been cancelled or postponed as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, and it is impossible to know at this time the level of restrictions that may be in place in the coming months.

They added that, following Welsh Government guidance, they will look to reschedule the food festival as soon as is safe and appropriate.

“I am sure that our stall holders, contractors, sponsors and visitors will be as disappointed as we are, but please be assured that we are busy working behind the scenes to ensure we can bring the food festival back as soon as possible," said Ms Mudd.
