Police have cordoned off an alleyway in Newport city centre following a woman's unexplained death. The taped-off area is Skinner Lane, which runs off Corn Street and alongside the Sports Direct store.

A Gwent Police spokeswoman said the force received a report at around 7.40am on Thursday that a woman had been found unresponsive on Corn Street. "Officers attended along with personnel from the Welsh Ambulance Service, who confirmed that a 59-year-old woman had died," she added. "The death is being treated as unexplained and enquiries are ongoing."

A large police presence and forensic team are on the scene. Inspector Jennie Tinsley-Brustad said: “Officers will be making further enquiries. It is possible that you may see ongoing police activity in the area as part of this work, but please don’t be alarmed. If you have concerns or questions then please do stop and talk with us.”
