The free agents available to Swansea amid Luke Williams' hunt for signing (original) (raw)

Swansea City are, according to Luke Williams, poised to assess options in the free transfer market during the international break, amid ongoing concerns around the level of firepower in their squad following a frustrating goalless draw at home to Stoke City at the weekend.

Williams has declined to give too much away around the identity of this possible new recruit, who will be handed the chance to impress at Fairwood before the club make a decision.

Only bottom-of-the-table Cardiff City and Preston North End have scored fewer goals than the Swans so far this season, meaning many are operating on the assumption that it will be a player potentially capable of bolstering Swansea's forward options.

The club have shown a willingness to dip into more foreign markets in their efforts to shape this squad, and it's possible that the name in the building could be one somewhat unfamiliar to supporters.

But there are still some options out there with Championship experience searching for new employers.

Here's just a few of them.

Kemar Roofe

A player who already has history with the club, having bagged a brace for then League Two side Oxford United as they knocked out the Premier League Swans in the FA Cup.

Roofe would go on to rack up plenty of Championship experience with Leeds United, before later enjoying spells with Anderlecht and Rangers, whom he left in the summer.

Whether he would be interested in a return to English football remains to be seen, but he does have a solid record at this level, netting 29 goals in 110 Championship appearances.

Isaac Success

The 28-year-old is unattached having left Serie A side Udinese by mutual consent in the summer, and is already believed to be attracting interest from Turkey since his departure.

Having also played in the Premier League and La Liga, it might well be a difficult one for Swansea to get done, particularly from a financial point of view.

Success has played in the Championship with Watford, but made just 10 appearances in the 2020/21 season, having seen his game- time restricted by an Achilles injury.

Samuel Kalu

Another Nigerian last seen on these shores in a Watford shirt, the winger spent last season out on loan at Swiss side Lausanne-Sport, where he netted three goals in 21 appearances.

The 27-year-old, a Nigeria international, joined the Hornets when they were in the Premier League back in January 2022, but made just 13 appearances for the club, most of which were in the Championship.

Injuries haven't helped his career, with his time in England curtailed by a long-term hamstring injury, and his recent record on the treatment table might just put the Swans off.

Adam Reach

The winger, who can also play at full-back, left West Brom in the summer, and has bags of experience at this level with 375 second tier appearances to his name.

At 31, his best years are likely behind him, but he probably still has some qualities that could well appeal to Luke Williams.

Reports claim he has already held talks with an unnamed Championship club, although that was around a month ago. He is still, at the time of writing, without a new club.

Cyrus Christie

Could the free agent be a full-back? It's certainly a position where Williams could do with more depth, and the 32-year-old has proved a hit here in the past.

Christie joined the Swans on loan halfway through the 2022/23 season, and soon became an important component of Russell Martin's plans, making 23 appearances, scoring three goals.

There was some enthusiasm to make his move permanent after he became a free agent the following summer, but a deal never materialised and he joined Hull City, whom he left in the summer when his contract expired.
