A popular independent breakfast cafe and coffee shop has announced it will serve pancakes until midnight on February, 21 (Shrove Tuesday/Pancake Day). Haystack Cafe in Brynhyfryd, Swansea, has gained quite the reputation locally for its huge piles of moreish pancakes served with a wide choice of toppings, including bacon and maple syrup, yoghurt and berries, peaches and cream, and Kinder sauce and Nutella - and you'll be able to order all of these and more on Tuesday.

As well as the usual pancake menu, Haystack Cafe also whips up huge "freakshakes," cooked breakfasts and a wide range of lunch options too. On Pancake Day, the team will also be serving special pancakes with salted caramel apple crumble, chocolate and caramel, Nutella and berries, Wagon Wheels or French Fancies - as well as offering a 'stack it your way option'.

Announcing the return of "Pancake Day midnight madness," staff wrote on social media: "Pancake Day Midnight Madness is back! Open until Midnight, sit-in or takeaway on Tuesday the 21st. Get it in the calendar. Entire pancake menu on all-day including a full Stack It Yourself option. For collection, call us. Nobody is missing out on pancakes this year."

Haystack Café has been running for almost five years and is currently rated 4.5 out of 5 on TripAdvisor. The eatery is listed there as the 12th best place for a 'quick bite,' out of 97 eateries in the Swansea area and won a Travellers Choice award in 2022. Reviewers speak of the delicious food and friendly staff.

One review, from earlier this month, reads: "What’s not to love about this place!? Amazing coffee, amazing brunch, with a huge variety and the best pancakes. Great staff who are really helpful," whilst another review reads: "Mouth-watering, delicious and so welcoming! Love the decor… very cosy and quirky. Would definitely return!"

The exciting pancake event comes just a week after the eatery was sadly the victim of a burglary. A suspected thief was caught on camera breaking into thecafé before rifling through its till and escaping through the window. Police are now investigating the incident which took place at around 6.30pm on Saturday, February 11.

Footage, which you can see in a previous article here, captured a man wearing a hooded jacket forcibly gaining access to the property, before breaking into the cash register and stealing money from within. He then clambered out through a window and fled.

Manager of Haystack, Liam Lazarus, said: "We delayed opening for an hour as we had to clean the kitchen because of all the glass which was smashed everywhere. The staff were all taken aback by the scare of it all – you always think it's not going to be you. We've never experienced a burglary like this before. I feel like it could have been a lot worse – the building wasn't smashed up, which is a normal result of a break-in, which would have disturbed the business for a bit longer.

"We managed to patch up the glasswork immediately. Instead of all the trouble of insurance claims we thought it would be easier to crack on with it and we've put more safety measures in place. We've done our own post on social media which we had really good support from with 1,000 people sharing it.

"We've had a few strong leads which have been passed over to the police but any information anyone may have would be valuable. Customers have been really supportive and have come in just to see how staff are which has been really nice. It was just kind of a bit of a downer from the point of a view of staff."
