The federal and state governments in the United States share a great deal of power in many ways. Local governments must be granted power by the state government. In general mayors or city councils are directly elected by the people in the area that local government serves. There are four main types of local government including municipalities, special districts, counties and school districts. Counties are the largest units of local government. There are about 8000 counties in the United States.
