The Supreme Court - US Government (original) (raw)
The Supreme Court of the US is the higest court in America. It is the only court established by the Constitution. There are 9 justices on the Supreme Court.
The Judicial Branch interprets the meaning of laws, applies laws to individual cases and decidesif laws violate the Constition. It is comprised of the Supreme Court and other federal courts. The Constitution of the United States divides the federal government into three branches to make sure no individual, or group, will have too much power. These branches include legislative, executive and judicial. Each branch of government can change acts of the other branches. For example, the president can veto legislation created by Congress. Congress confirms or rejects the president's nominees and can remove the president from office. The justices of the Supreme Court can overturn unconstitutional laws and are nominated by the president and confirmed by the Senate. This ability of each branch to respond to the actions of the other branches is called the system of "checks and balances".
