The 2022 Vienna Philharmonic New Year's Concert takes place on January 1, 2022, under the baton of Daniel Barenboim in the Golden Hall of the Musikverein in Vienna. Daniel Barenboim's close musical partnership with the Vienna Philharmonic started in 1965. After 2009 and 2014 the concert on January 1st marks the 3rd time, that Daniel Barenboim conducts this prestigious concert event.

The 2022 New Year's Concert will be broadcast in over 90 countries and followed by millions of television viewers around the world.

Important Information for Ticket Holders

Due to necessary preventive measures which have been adopted on short notice, the Vienna Philharmonic finds itself obligated to reduce the number of persons in attendance at the New Year's Concerts 2021/22 to a maximum of 1000 per concert. This reduction and implementation of the 2G+ rule will enable guests who are vaccinated or recovered, and, in addition, produce a PCR test (valid up to 48 hours from sample extraction) and wear a FFP2 mask, to attend the concert.

According to Daniel Froschauer, Chairman of the Vienna Philharmonic, "Even though these measures create an exceptional logistical challenge and necessitate a high degree of understanding and willingness to adapt, we are glad that this year the New Year's Concerts can once again take place with an audience in attendance. For all those concert visitors who due to this reduction cannot be present in the concert hall, seats for next year's concerts will be reserved."

Postponed tickets
We have decided to postpone the tickets for all those visitors who have purchased seats in the balcony or in the gallery by one year to the next turn of the year 2022/23. The rebooking to 2022/23 will happen automatically, on the customer's side, there is nothing else to do.
Attention: Already picked up tickets in the sectors "Balkon" and "Galerie" are invalid for the upcoming turn of the year 2021/2022.
FFP2 mask
During the New Year's Concert, New Year's Eve Concert and the pre-performance of the New Year's Concert, FFP2 masks are mandatory throughout the Musikverein.
Medical certificates exempting from the mask requirement are exceptionally not valid. In this case we kindly ask you to refrain from visiting the performance. Your ticket price will be refunded.

Daniel Barenboim is one of today’s most outstanding artists. As a pianist and conductor, he has been active for decades in major cities across Europe and all around the world; as the initiator of several highly acclaimed projects, he has contributed decisively to international music life.

The Beginnings
Daniel Barenboim was born in Buenos Aires in 1942. He received his first piano lessons at age five, and was first taught by his mother. Later, he studied under his father, who would remain his only piano teacher. He gave his first public concert when he was seven. In 1952, he moved with his parents to Israel. At age eleven, Daniel Barenboim took part in conducting classes in Salzburg under Igor Markevitch. In 1955 and 1956, he studied harmony and composition with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. At age ten, Daniel Barenboim gave his international debut performance as a solo pianist in Vienna and Rome; Paris, London and New York followed. Since then, he has regularly toured Europe and the United States, but also South America, Australia, and the Far East.
Chicago / Milan / Berlin
Ever since his conducting debut in 1967 in London with the Philharmonia Orchestra, Daniel Barenboim has been in great demand with leading orchestras around the world. Between 1975 and 1989, he was chief conductor of the Orchestre de Paris. His debut as an opera conductor he gave at the Edinburgh Festival 1973. Over a period of eighteen years, from 1981 until 1999, he was active as conductor of the Bayreuth Festival.
From 1991 until 2006, Daniel Barenboim was Music Director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. In 1992, he became General Music Director of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, where he was also artistic director from 1992 to August 2002. In 2000, the Staatskapelle Berlin voted him chief-conductor-for-life. Both, in the opera as well as on the concert stage, Daniel Barenboim and the Staatskapelle Berlin have acquired a large repertoire, especially great work cycles. Beside the great classic-romantic repertoire, Daniel Barenboim continues to focus on modern and contemporary music.
From 2007 to 2014, Daniel Barenboim was active at Milan’s Teatro alla Scala, from 2011 he served as music director.
Daniel Barenboim and the Vienna Philharmonic
Daniel Barenboim has played a prominent role in the history of the Vienna Philharmonic. Whereas his artistic collaboration with the Philharmonic as conductor began in 1989, his first appearance with the orchestra was as a pianist in 1965. Over the years, he has conducted many important Philharmonic concerts, including two New Year's Concerts in 2009 and 2014, the Summer Night Concert in 2009, and numerous subscription concerts and concerts on tour. Daniel Barenboim is closely linked with the Vienna Philharmonic not only by this long and fruitful artistic partnership, but also by a great personal friendship. It was Daniel Barenboim who conducted the first Vienna Philharmonic after the Corona lockdown in June 2020 in the Musikverein.
Artist Development
In 1999, Daniel Barenboim founded together with the Palestinian literary scholar Edward Said the West-Eastern Divan Workshop, which brings together young musicians from Israel and the Arab countries to play music together. Since this time the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra has developed into a celebrated ensemble with performances in many musical centres in Europe and the world.
Since 2015, talented young musicians from the Middle East also study at the Barenboim-Said Akademie in Berlin, another initiative founded by Daniel Barenboim. In the fall of 2016, this university for Music and the Humanities housed in the renovated former stage depot of the State Opera started enrolling up to 90 students in a four-year bachelor program. Also housed in the same building as the academy is the Frank Gehry-designed Pierre Boulez Hall that enriches Berlin’s musical life since March 2017.
Publications and Awards
Daniel Barenboim has been awarded the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, as well as being named Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire, Commandeur de la Légion d’honneur and UN Messenger of Peace. Oxford University has also awarded him an honorary doctorate.
His books include the autobiography A Life in Music (1992, new edition 2002), Parallels and Paradoxes (with Edward Said, 2004), Everything is Connected – The Power of Music (2008), Dialoghi su musica e teatro – Tristano e Isotta (with Patrice Chéreau, 2008) and La musica è un tutto. Etica ed estetica (2012; Music as a Whole: Ethics and Asthetics).

Philharmonic Version of the Radetzky March

Johann Strauß' Radetzky March, op. 228, was first performed in a Vienna Philharmonic New Year's Concert on January 1, 1946. Josef Krips was the conductor, and according to a note in the Vienna Philharmonic archives, the march was performed before the Blue Danube Waltz as a first encore.

Floral Decorations by Vienna Parks and Gardens

When Daniel Barenboim raises his baton for the New Year's Concert on January 1, 2022, it will mark the third time that he has conducted this prestigious concert. The partnership between the Vienna Philharmonic and the Vienna City Gardens for the floral arrangements throughout the Golden Hall of the Vienna Musikverein, has been in place since 2015.

Once again this year, to the delight of television viewers around the world, the Vienna City Gardens, along with the Austrian gardeners and florists, will produce the arrangements which light up the Golden Hall in a resplendent sea of blossoming floral color.
