English Biography

Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands

Prince Bernhard Leopold Frederik Everhard Julius Coert Karel Godfried Pieter of Lippe-Biesterfeld, later Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands, was born in the duchy of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach.
According to his birth certificate on June 28, 1911 at 2:45 pm. His mother has always said that this was an erroneous entry. All his life he celebrated his birthday on June 29, the date mentioned in his naturalization and marriage certificate. There is no official proof that June 29 is correct. Nevertheless, it is likely that June 29, is the actual birthday of Prince Bernhard.
The first years of his childhood he spent on the family estate Reckenwald (Wojnowo), near the town Bomst in the province of Posen, later Posen-West Prussia.
At the age of 12 years, in 1923, he was sent to a boarding school in Züllichau (now Sulechów) and after World War II the Germans had to give up this part of Poland and Reckenwalde was named Wojnowo.

Bernhard was the husband of Queen Juliana of the Netherlands and they had four children, including the mother of the current monarch Princess Beatrix and daughters Irene van Oranje-Nassau, Margriet van Oranje-Nassau and Christina van Oranje-Nassau
The couple's engagement was announced in 1936, and they were married at The Hague on 7 January 1937. Earlier, Bernhard had been granted Dutch citizenship, and changed the spelling of his names from German to Dutch

Illegitimate children :

  1. Alicia de Bielefeld (21 juni 1952) from a German pilot.
  2. Alexia Grinda (10 juli 1967) from his Parisian mistress Hélène Grinda

Prince Bernhard , at the age of 93, died of cancer in a Utrecht hospital on 1 December 2004. On 11 December 2004, he was interred with a lavish state funeral at the Nieuwe Kerk, Delft.Together with the playing of many military marches and the forming of guards of honour by Second World War veterans this gave the funeral procession a military character as the late Prince, a Second World War veteran, had wished.
