Biography
Howard William "Howie" Morenz was born September 1, 1902, the son of William Morenz and Rosina Pauli of Perth, Ontario[1] [2] [3]
On June 21, 1926, he married Mary Louise McKay, daughter of Herbert McKay and Wilhelmina Aird[4], and their children included:
- Howie Jr, born 1927 (d. 2015),
- Donald, born 1933 (d. 1939),
- Marlene born 1934 (d. March 2, 2018), who married Bernie "Boom Boom" Geoffrion, another hockey hall-of-fame player.
Howie was considered hockey's first bona fide superstar. Beginning in 1923, he played centre for three National Hockey League (NHL) teams: the Montreal Canadiens (in two stints), the Chicago Black Hawks, and the New York Rangers. He played 14 seasons in the NHL, was a member of a Stanley Cup–winning team three times, and placed in the top 10 leading scorers ten times. For seven straight seasons, Morenz led the Canadiens in both goals scored and points. He was named the winner of the Hart Trophy as the most valuable player of the league three times, and he led the league once in goals scored and twice in points scored. After the introduction of All-Star teams in 1931, he was named to the NHL First All-Star Team twice and the NHL Second All-Star Team once.
On January 28, 1937, Howie suffered a serious break to his leg in a home game against the Black Hawks. It was generally agreed that the injury would end his career, but no one expected his death on March 8[5], due to complications related to his injury.
On March 11, 1937, he was buried in Mount Royal Cemetery in Outremont[6]. The Canadiens turned the Forum into a shrine in his honour for the occasion, and thousands of fans lined the streets and crowded the arena in a tremendous outpouring of emotion and respect for one of hockey's immortals.
After his death, the Canadiens retired his jersey number, the first time the team had done so for any player.
He was one of the first to be elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame when it was established in 1945.
In 1950, Howie Morenz was voted the outstanding hockey player of the half-century by a national press poll.
