Biography
Anna (Schanzkowska) Anderson is Notable.
Anna Anderson (born Franziska Schanzkowska) was the best known impostor to pose as Anastasia Romanov, the youngest daughter of Tsar Nikolai II and Alexandra Feodorovna (Alix of Hesse) Romanov.
She was a Polish factory worker with a severe history of mental illness. After she attempted to take her own life in 1920, she went through several names before settling on Anna Anderson. She then started claiming she was Anastasia Romanov. Her claims started getting attention in March 1922, but private investigators debunked them fully by 1927. However, for the rest of her life, people would claim she was Anastasia.
She moved to the US in 1968, being bounced from house to house of the people who believed her. She then married Jack Manahan of Charlottesville, Virginia.
She passed away in 1984 in Charlottesville. She has two grave sites - the real one in Germany where her ashes were scattered, and a cenotaph next to her husband in Charlottesville. The cenotaph reads "HLH Anastasia of Russia, June 5/18 1901, Feb 12 1984". The birth date is Anastasia Romanov's birthday - Franziska/Anna herself was found to be born 16 December 1896.
The real Anastasia Romanov's body would be identified in 2007, 89 years after she and her family were murdered. Several samples of Anna Anderson's DNA were tested posthumously. One batch of DNA samples proved no relation to the Romanovs. Her mitochondrial DNA was also tested, and it was proven to match Karl Maucher, a great nephew of Franziska Schanzkowska.
