Brexit leader to head Mississippi Center for Public Policy (original) (raw)

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - A former British member of Parliament who helped lead efforts to bring the United Kingdom out of the European Union has been tapped to take over a local conservative policy think tank.

On Tuesday, the Mississippi Center for Public Policy announced that Douglas Carswell had been appointed president and CEO of the organization.

Carwell served in Parliament for 12 years and was a co-founder of Vote Leave, the official campaign that won the referendum for the United Kingdom to leave the European Union.

“The appointment of Douglas as the new CEO is an incredible win not only for the center, but for Mississippi as a whole,” said interim CEO Lesley Davis. “Douglas is an international leader in the fight for freedom and a generational talent with a tremendous vision for both our organization and our state.”

Carswell received a degree in history from the University of East Anglia, and his master’s degree at King’s College, University of London. In addition to serving in Parliament, Carswell was an advisor to the United Kingdom government on trade. He is the author of four books.

Carswell said in a statement that he believes in American exceptionalism, saying that “the U.S. is the greatest republic the world has ever known, because she is the most successful experiment in freedom that there has ever been.”
