Bio

One of only five players to have won the World Women’s Snooker Championship on three or more occasions, Hong Kong’s Ng On Yee is one of the most successful sporting figures to have emerged from Hong Kong.

Since 2011 Ng has established herself as one of the most successful female snooker players of all-time, becoming of one of only six players to win at least 20 world ranking titles, including three world titles, four UK Championship titles and two Masters crowns.

The 2023/24 season saw her return to form with three ranking victories, finishing top of the one-year ranking list and second on the official world ranking list behind only Thailand’s Mink Nutcharut.

World Champion

It was in 2015 that Ng would gain mainstream attention as she sensationally defeated the 10-time defending champion Reanne Evans 4-2 at the semi-final stage of the World Women’s Championship, before going on to become the first ever Asian woman to capture the title with a 6-2 win against Emma Bonney.

Although Evans regained her crown a year later, On Yee won the title for a second time in 2017 following a dramatic final which saw her defeat India’s Vidya Pillai 6-5 on the final pink at the Lagoon Billiard Room in Singapore.

In February 2018 she was able to become the first Asian woman to become world number one and a month later went on to successfully defend the her world title in Malta. In doing so she became the first player ever to win the title without the loss of a single frame.

She made her highest ever break in competition of 139 in the semi-finals of the Australian Women’s Open in Sydney, a feat only bettered by Evans (140×2).

At the 2023 US Open, she became the first female player to compile a century break on American soil with a run of 121 against Frances Tso.

Ng has twice been named the ‘Best of the Best’ at the annual sports awards in her home country in recognition of her achievements.

In March 2021, it was announced that she Ng would turn professional from the start of the 2021/22 season, receiving a two-year professional tour card after the World Women’s Snooker Tour became an official WST qualifying tour.

In February 2022, she defeated Wu Yize 4-2 to qualify for the televised stages on the Welsh Open, in doing so becoming the first woman to win a professional match in five years since. Later in the year Ng repeated the feat at the British Open qualifiers as she scored a sensational 4-3 victory against former professional world champion Ken Doherty.

Early Career

Following her Tour debut at the 2011 World Championship, On Yee captured her first ranking title a year later at the Northern Championship. Further success came at the 2013 UK Championship and 2014 Southern Classic, before she reached the final of the World Championship for the first time in 2014.
