DO’S AND DON’TS
To help keep your property tidy—and the City clean, here is a friendly list of Do’s and Don’ts to help you.
Please Do:
- Put garbage in plastic bags and securely tie. You can use standard garbage bags or plastic shopping bags.
- Make sure lid of your garbage can is closed. Please DO NOT OVERLOAD IT.
- Put cart five feet from any yard or bulk waste or other obstruction such as mailbox, light pole
- Make sure cart’s lid opening is toward street
- Make sure aerosol spray cans are completely empty
- Place pet waste in proper disposal bag
- Visit “A-Z on Waste Disposal & Recycling” for more information on proper disposal practices
Please Don’t:
- Load the container past lid closing capacity
- Place bags on top of or beside the cart
- Place building or bulk materials— including wood, plaster, concrete, tires of any kind— in can
- Put any dead animals into garbage cart
- Paint or attach graffiti or other art to cart
- Place can such that truck arm cannot reach it. No obstructions.
- Put hazardous waste into garbage carts. For a complete list see our Household Hazardous Waste page.
WHERE TO PLACE YOUR GARBAGE CAN
- Place your can curbside the night before collection day but no earlier than 6 p.m.
- Place your can at the curb or the edge of the street with the front facing the street
- The collector will return your cart to the same place.
- Place your can at least ten feet away from yard trash, poles, mailboxes and any other obstacles.
TIP: Keep your garbage can from smelling. Periodically rinse out the can out. You can use soap and a little bleach as needed. Allow to dry completely.
WHEN MOVING TO A NEW ADDRESS
Leave the garbage can and recycling bins at your old address if you change addresses. Place them behind the home and not visible from the street. Each can is assigned to one specific address and has a serial number. If you move to a new address and there is no can, please call Customer Service to request a new can at the new address or submit a service request
